Do not debate about science and math if you don't understand some basic concepts for both:

  • .999... = 1* is not a mathematical inconsistency. Don't try and use it as an argument to why mathematics is wrong. It only shows you don't have correct ideas about basic mathematical concepts.

  • Science can not be proven. The only things that can be proven are logic (mathematical logic, that is) and mathematics. A theory does not become a law, and they are completely different concepts.

  • Paradigm shifts make science strong. They do not show a weakness in any way. In the 19th century, people believe that the sun could only be a few million years old because all the fuel from charcoal and oxygen would burn out by then. When Einstein produced the theory of relativity, and mass-energy equivalence was realized, nuclear fusion was realized as a more likely possibility (and now it has been shown to be correct). If science had stuck with the charcoal-oxygen theory, then scientists would've been idiots. On the other hand, look as the fiasco with Galileo and the church over heliocentrism.

*They are exactly equal. It is not an approximation; it is not an estimation; it is not rounding. Do not dispute this in the comments or your comment will be deleted, because this conversation has been on the internet a million times before. Just look it up.

i'd actually encourage the use of this! if someone tries to claim that this is an inconsistency, it shows you right away that they're an idiot. it lets you know who to ignore. this and the monty hall problem are handy for this purpose.
Psh, everyone knows that 0s and 1s do not exist, but only numbers between it. No one is all and all is not no one (TRYING to joke here >_>) :P

But you're right about 0.999 = 1, I mean, how else can 1/3 be 0.333 yet 3/3 can exist as 1, when you do 3*1/3, you get 0.999?
You don't get .999, you get .999.... Big difference.

Also, I think the Monty Hall problem is a bit confusing. Someone explained it to me before, and it made sense then, but I've forgotten the explanation.

[Edit]
The Wikipedia entry proved valuable. I get it now. :P
mathematics was created by the government in an attempt to distribute AIDS to the black community.

You get 1. ;-)
You know what I meant :P And yeah, I meant 0.999.... (well, actually, I meant to do 0.999* but I got lazy)
In regards to paradigm shifts, I believe one of the criticisms leveled at the scientific community is that it sometimes becomes rather dogmatic and hostile to challenges to the existing order. Of course, this is actually related more to power structures than science per se.

The South Park where Cartman is frozen and awakes in the atheist techno future kills me. "Science help us!"
