Also, what Pop said. If you make something, it is copyrighted - you don' need to register it.

You do, however, have /proof/ that it's you that made the item if you register it, and gain some rights relating to legal action, I believe.

Now thats in the states, in canada its basically the same, except for my knowledge about canadian law is from a textbook so its a better source than wikipedia. Thats about it. So enough trying to argue something that can be proven.

Copyrights are the right to copy something, if somebody copies an icon file from the RSC cache of my game then i can actually get at them for that. Not that anybody would bother, but we do have the right to. Patents protect a process or invention. Trademarks protect names and distinctive features. Yes yes, i just had a final on all this fun stuff.

Patents last for 20 years, you basically get a monopoly on the invention by disclosing how the invention works.

Copyrights last for 50 years after the author dies.

Trademarks last 15 years and are renewable.

you moron, you cant just say that. People "hold up in court" copyright for intellectual property all the time. If somebody plagiarizes an essay you release on the internet then you can sue those feckers, art and code is the same way. Just admit you were wrong. God it wouldnt kill you.
