A story, icon, piece of music, etc. doens't have to be registered to be copyrighted. Under international copyright laws, when you make that piece of art, it is already copyrighted.

religion, 9/11 conspiracy, libertarianism, iraq, iran.
<_< >_> Also, what Pop said. If you make something, it is copyrighted - you don' need to register it. You do, however, have /proof/ that it's you that made the item if you register it, and gain some rights relating to legal action, I believe. |

And the proof that we made it is the fact that there are plenty of witnesses and BYOND hub timestamps and file last modified values and etc. Anybody who wanted to steal credit for a GOA icon would have a hard time avoiding the thousands of witnesses who say they stole it. |

no... copyright law still protects the graphics that are in GOA regardless if the overall theme of the game is to naruto (in which we are covered by fair use laws).

I'd appreciate if Masterdan stopped using my ORIGINAL icons that I edited from a RPG maker sheet.

Actually..I believe what you guys are referring to is being immoral..not copyright. The fact that you made it doesn't automatically make it copyright..And you can't take any type of action against someone..And I'll stand by that statement unless someone finds me a legible source that proves your statement..Until then...It's all garbage.

your incorrect icewarriorX i dont know why your making posts like this with absolutely no education in law. However if you take an introductory law course youll find out that something does not need to be registered to be copywritten.
I dont know why youd bother to make a post like that if you didnt really know whether or not you were right, jebers. From wikipedia : "Registration of copyright While copyright in the United States automatically attaches upon the creation of an original work of authorship, registration with the Copyright Office puts a copyright holder in a better position if litigation arises over the copyright." Now thats in the states, in canada its basically the same, except for my knowledge about canadian law is from a textbook so its a better source than wikipedia. Thats about it. So enough trying to argue something that can be proven. |
Actually I was just wondering who would've actually pursued some kindof copyright registration in BYOND..Rather than just slapping a C with a cirlce around it at the end of their hub. I figure more professional-looking developers like Iccusion or SilkGames might have pursued one type of registration of some sort..Wasn't meant to start a big debate on Whether the C you put at the end is justified or not.....But either way wikipedia quotes are not gonna change anyones mind either way..Copyright protects the fixed expression of ideas, but not the ideas themselves (Ideas are protected by patents).

Copyrights are the right to copy something, if somebody copies an icon file from the RSC cache of my game then i can actually get at them for that. Not that anybody would bother, but we do have the right to. Patents protect a process or invention. Trademarks protect names and distinctive features. Yes yes, i just had a final on all this fun stuff. Extended: Patents last for 20 years, you basically get a monopoly on the invention by disclosing how the invention works. Copyrights last for 50 years after the author dies. Trademarks last 15 years and are renewable. :P i dont like it when people on byond make assumptions as to things, i mean really, you cant just say "Copyright protects the fixed expression of ideas but not the ideas themselves" no thats not true, and i dont really believe how much retardo lying has to be used on an ongoing basis here. This isnt even about me, its just GAH, how can you simply lie about what a copyright is? its an affront to reality. |
However you define copyright...None of it would hold up in court...Nomatter how hard you want to believe it can, anyways, I'm not gonna go on and on and let this troll to 60+ replies..So I'm abandoning this topic.

People "hold up in court" copyright for intellectual property all the time. If somebody plagiarizes an essay you release on the internet then you can sue those feckers, art and code is the same way. Just admit you were wrong. God it wouldnt kill you. Out of all the things in the world the law is pretty straightforward and unambiguous (it has to be). This is not a 9/11 conspiracy theory argument, this is not lets agree to disagree, this is fact and your trying to argue against it and its pointless. |
Correction, You are trying to argue..You've edited that post like 3 times since you wrote it and you're trying to force your opinion on me. If I refuse to believe adding a C to the end of your non original game/graphics makes it all okay and protects you in a magic shit barrier..And that somehow that proves you're the rightful owner...Then that's my business..I guess I'm just more of an in-writing kindof guy. Don't try to throw your "I've taken this class" bullshit on me...Maybe you should take ethics next.
