One month ago today, we brought home a Yellow Lab named Lito, hoping to permanently adopt him from Lab Rescuers. He was very well behaved (except for "counter surfing" to get into food) and got along very well with Bruno and the cats. Just a really mellow, happy 7-year-old dog with some special needs.

Lito has pretty severe skin allergies that his original owners apparently did nothing to treat. He itches constantly, even waking us up sometimes at night with his scratching. He would need ongoing medication, expensive non-allergenic food, and regular vet visits to keep his allergies in check. We were more than willing to take this on for such a great and deserving dog.

But then a family emergency came up which put an extra strain on our finances. Over the next couple of weeks, it was becoming more and more uncertain whether we could take on the additional responsibility of Lito's medical needs. We agonized for about 2 weeks, not wanting to send him back - not only for his sake, but also for ours. We had grown quite attached to him by this time.

Finally my wife and I made what was probably the most difficult decision we've made as a couple. We took Lito back on Saturday and returned him to the rescue group. It was absolutely heartbreaking. His foster mom at Lab Rescuers was happy to see him and totally understanding of our situation. She assured us she wouldn't let him go to just anyone, but she'd find him a home as good as ours. I hope so.

That night even Bruno seemed pretty bummed that his foster brother was gone. The two dogs are both so mellow that they didn't really interact a lot, so you couldn't exactly call them best friends. But maybe they had started to form a bond in the short time they spent together. I remember they seemed to have a particularly good time the night before Lito's return, playing fetch together. It was a bittersweet moment, seeing them so happy, yet knowing the decision we'd made.

Goodbye, Lito. We're happy to have known you for those 4 weeks, and we hope you find the perfect permanent family for the rest of your life. We all miss you (even the cats).

Awww, that's a touching story.
Awwwwww. =(
Yep..

I don't know what I would do if I had to give away one of my dogs. =(
Why'd you have to make me cry this late at night? :'(

Yeah, it was a really tough decision. The only reason we could even consider it was that we only had him for a few weeks, and hadn't even signed the adoption papers yet. If he'd been around another month or two, I think we would've just tried to find a way to make it work. We've had Bruno for 11 months and there's absolutely no way we would give him up for anything now.

Hopefully in another month or two after the dust settles, we might be able to look at getting another Lab from the rescue group. This time it would have to be one without preexisting medical conditions, though...
Ha.. I have a pug too, but he's a faun one. Here's a pic:

Mike,
We had adopted (and returned) lito before you did...We were first time dog owners and were not told about his major skin condition or his food obsession. After spending $2,000 on vet bills and seeing very little progress (as well as some other things going on) we had to give him back to Janet. We made clear to her that it was essentiall that she let the next owners know exactly how severe the skin condition was (and that the allergists has been unable to do anything about it, etc.) My question is did she tell you all this?
Hi Kevin -

Wow, I never thought in a million years that someone who has a history with Lito would find this page! Yes, Janet did give us Lito's history and current status, so we were aware going in. Our pug, Bruno, has allergies that we were able to successfully treat, so we were hoping to work towards the same outcome with Lito. As you illustrate, it was expensive for us too, but we were prepared for that until something else came up. Our hope as well is that the next owner is fully aware of his condition. We sat at the adoption event talking to a few interested people, making sure they knew the full extent. I hope that helped.

Anyway my comment about previous owners not treating him was not about you - she told us all you'd been through with him already at the vet and gave us what records she had. It was directed at whoever had him before he came to Lab Rescuers. Our vet said it looked like he hadn't been treated early on in life, which is why his skin is so dark and in bad shape.

Thanks for leaving a comment here, and if you want to talk privately more, you can email me at [email protected].
That's really sad, I could never give up any of our cats. We all love 'em to bits. It's always tragic losing a pet, even if you've only had 'em for a while.

Nice site on your wedding by the way. =) Makes ye go all mushy. Hehe.
awww poor dog well i gusse you can get somthing like Lito2?
