Just bought Oblivion for the PC. Then I read that they're releasing the GOTY edition (inc. both expansion packs) NEXT MONTH. For like loads cheaper than if I were to buy the expansion packs themselves.

Jesus christ. =/ What do you think I should do- buy the expansions like a good little consumer, take the game back (hopefully) and wait for the GOTY edition, or try and torrent the expansions?
Take it back. Consumers maximise their quantity, firms maximise their profits. Being the consumer, you shouldn't help them maximise their profits!
Take it back and then pirate the full game + expansion.

Ohohoho.
The game doesn't even come with a serial. I bet it's super easy to 'pirate' (is there a verb specifically for stealing software candy from a faceless corporate baby?).
Just use some HACK TOOLS or something.
Oh, you mean torrent(var/f as file)?
Nah I'm referring to the downpour of rain kind. Honest, mods!
Be a pirate, it's cheaper.
Now to download some mods... one thing that sucks about vanilla Oblivion: becoming a master in heavy armour means the armour doesn't encumber you at all.

So uh, why bother ever using light armour? The quicker you get to master in heavy the better, and then light armour has no benefits. Need to find a mod that'll change that (I found one but it changes loads of other stuff too).
I think the idea was to have them about equal in the end. Doesn't light armor get a 50% boost at some point?

Scan through the file and look for the piece just for the heavy armor. Or contact the mod creator and ask him how he did it. It's actually not as hard as most people think to use the editor.
