No wonder these things give the Dragonball series('s) such a bad name around here. It seems that anyone that attempts to represent the anime not only does a poor job at it, but they have no idea how to design a game, even when all of the information is provided to you.
I understand that the majority of the games are rips of leaked sources, but that's the creator's problem. It seems that all of the graphics look alike, all of the players are the same stereotypical DBZer powerplayers, and it's just sickening to even consider these things "DBZ games".
My last journey was into the worst one of them all, Dragonball Z: Legends Reborn First thing that I was told to do when I log in is to train, so of course I found a "train" verb. I click it and the rest is automatic, what fun is that? Then I hit level 121 (WTF?) in roughly 2 seconds, and as soon as that happens I start getting destroyed by these guys who have apparently been in the game for a while... lol.
There was no warning of me being attacked, no graphical sign of it or anything, I was just simply told that I have died at the hands of some super saiyan guy. Well at that time I started asking around about what the hell I was playing. Apparently there are no stat caps, there is no story, you start at level 120, all you do is cycle through training and pvp (even though you'll never catch up to those that were there before you), and I guess I was a "n00b" for thinking that this was a horrible game... lol.
That's pretty much how it flew for the rest of the fan games out there too, I remember "DBZ games" back in the day were similar but at least the people tried to make them look like a game. Now people don't even waste time trying to make the things make sense, and sadly you'll find like 50+ people on these things at a time.
I guess I'll have to wait for DBO2 to come out before I have anything good to play on BYOND in that aspect, playing your own game just doesn't give the same feeling. DBTC is decent but it's so exploitable that it's not fun multiplayer.

Naruto ones seemed just as bad, but if you know anything decent share with me. I want something you can actually play.

I remember when I first joined BYOND (back in '01, woo), I joined a DBZ game having no knowledge of what DBZ was (and I still don't really know, because I decided that I hate anime). Well, I must have wandered around for a good hour amongst people who where sitting at their 'pbags' and gravity chambers and beating on the 'high pl' guys to get more experience, all the while I'm looking for something "fun" to do in this "game". I got killed a lot by other players who evidently thought I was a "high pl" player worth good experience, then you wandered down a long boring pathway until you got revived at the end...and killed again.
I guess the only difference now is that they've evolved to the point where you no longer have to click the attack verb repeatedly. The DBZers have discovered programming loops! |
I'm sorry to hear you had such a bad experience. Most of the people who have those DBZ games seem to know little or nothing at all about the series. DBZ wasn't just about the "omg, im so much stronger than you because i train alots lulz". Of course 80% of it was sort of like that, the other 20% is what kept me interested. The quests, the abilities, the skills. They all threw variety into the world that was Dragonball.
I think the major problem with the games is recreating the training. Most are so brainwashed by the pbag training, its hard to go into any fan game and not see it. I think the solution is to innovate these methods. Take them to somewhere they haven't been before. |
I'd much sooner just ditch the DBZ setting altogether and go with something that doesn't have a reputation for having lousy games.

Personally I'd rather bring back some credibility to the media these games are based after. I'm a big fan and I wouldn't mind risking the publicity.
Edit: I make alot of typos lately... |

"Innovation" doesn't mean "fun." Yeah, because we all know when Wii brought innovation to gaming, it wasn't fun at all. </sarcasm> |

EXGuo wrote: Thank you for that sarcasm tag, or else I wouldn't have seen your witty comment for what it truly is. The Wii is innovative and fun. It just so happens that Nintendo is good at what it does. There are plenty of examples of things which are pretty innovative, but sorely lack in the fun department. Take your Jinketsu. Anyone want to walk up trees for hours on end? Yeah. |

Except for the fact that, that is not even 3% of the actual gameplay. If thats all you were doing when you were playing, you sorely missed out on alot. |

By fan games, do you mean DBZ Fan games? Cause there are a lot of fan games that are good. D:
