So i need a new graphics card for my machine:
AMD 64 X2 5000+
1GB DDR2 800MHZ Ram
Motherboard: 1 x PCI Express x 16 slot, 1 x PCI Express x 1 slot.

Im not a hardcore pc gamer but i need a graphics card that will last me a long time and for games that i may play later and one that supports HDTVs etc. Probably a graphics card that supports DirectX 10 and has pixel shader 3.0 (i think most do now?). So i would appreciate if you guys could help me out.
I don't know of a graphics card that will meet your needs, but I highly recommend you upgrade to 2GB of RAM. Most good video games these days require at least 1GB.
Yeah im on 1GB at the moment but i will get 2GB in a month or so.
8600GT. 120 dollars, will play any current Directx9 game on max or close to max. Best bang for your buck currently.
If you ever think you'll use linux, avoid ATI cards like the plague and use nvidia cards. Otherwise, if your only using windows, it doesn't make much of a difference.
Right now, DirectX10 cards are actually performing really badly in Directx10 mode, save for a few games like Crysis.

I would recommend that you still wait a while before getting yourself a Dx10 card (wait for them to fix the kinks in the drivers).
For now, just settle with a X1950XT or something.

[EDIT]: I found some benchmarks for Dx10 cards. http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3029&p=3
Cheers darke, and for linux, it can go fuck itself.

But it doesn't mean the DX10 won't get better after a while though?

I'll check out the x1950xt
