My argument suggests both will results in a ban (which is more true than false).
That's what it seems. I was merely indicating the mis-use of the term, or, at least, re-wording your post. :P

Sure, the rules set out by a server's host need to be respected and honored by ALL players in the game. Just because you think it's unwarranted, doesn't mean you do it. If it's not in the rules that you don't advertise, then you can go ahead. This keeps the rules concrete, and breaking the rules will always be breaking the rules.
However, I think that deciding if it is moral or not is a different story. Clearly that view changes based upon what position you are in. |

So me advertising games is kinda' pointless. So I suppose I'd be taking the moral side of the argument. |
But why the hell would you get banned instead of muted? It makes a lot more sense to mute somebody for such reasons instead of banning them.

I agree with you're first thought that, they get scared they'll loose their fans to another game, yet with that you can tell between games that are original and rips, original game creators won't have a problem because they're game is original and their fans are base solely around that type of game. Rips are quite the oppisite, I would discuss this more in detail at another time, but without my membership I can't at the moment, though i'm hoping to get one for my B-Day x.x, seems such a long way off. Miss ya guys, don't fall into the seductive lore of rips!

Sarm wrote a page or so ago:
If there's a rule put in place that says not to advertise, then yes that sort of ban is completely warranted. Whether or not you* agree with it, you'd still be breaking a game rule. I could make a rule in my hypothetical game that says "Don't put the letter J in your character name or you'll be banned" and then carry it out if I saw anybody using a J in their name. It'd be an immensely stupid rule, but that doesn't mean it's no longer in place. Someone would be better off trying to appeal to get the rule removed or to just play a different game, because thinking "this rule is stupid so I'm not going to follow it" and then claiming that being banned for it is unfair is just a waste of everyone's time. I don't think the point is whether the ban is warranted according to the rules, but rather if it is warranted according to common sense. I could make arbitrary rules and be completely unwarranted in enforcing them, even if they were written into my game's policy. The onus is on the administrator to have justifiable actions in all cases. In the military, for instance: you are ordered by your commanding officer to burn the village and shoot all of the villagers, since some of them are suspected to be Viet Cong. This is a direct order. You would not be wrong to follow this order according to the rules, but you would absolutely be unjustified in following it from a common sense standpoint. |

This isn't really a market though. Only very few games on BYOND actually make something which can be called profit vs the time and effort it took to create them. And in the Anime game business, which is actually where my post spawned from, there is no profit to be made at all. Thus the loss of players is exactly what I mentioned in my post, a popularity contest. Yes, it actually is... Something does not have to be monetarily rewarded to be a marketed product... The compensation here is simply the satisfaction of having others playing your game... In fact, for most game makers, isn't that the only worthwhile goal? If you lose your players, isn't the entire process a waste (learning experience aside)? And since Time is a very limited resource, it is almost more competitive than a monetary economy... Players might have the cash to spend on a dozen games, but never enough time for them all... |

Actually, I agree with you a lot more than you think (except, y'know, in this sentence). I just pretend to disagree with you to fool Popisfizzy into thinking I hate you.
