Introducing David M. Walker, Comptroller General of the United States. "The Comptroller General is the director of the Government Accountability Office (GAO), an agency founded in 1921 to ensure the accountability of the federal government." "The GAO is the non-partisan audit, evaluation, and investigative arm of Congress, and an agency in the Legislative Branch of the United States Government." "The Comptroller General is appointed by the President, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, for a 15-year, non-renewable term." "The long tenure of the Comptroller General and the manner of appointment and removal gives GAO a continuity of leadership and independence that is rare within government." (all quotes from Wikipedia)

So why should we pay attention to the Comptroller General?
#1 - He's the nation's accountant.
#2 - He doesn't answer to anyone but "We the People".
#3 - He can't be reappointed. (i.e. - He can be honest.)

If only we would elect economists and not figure heads. It is sad, I heard about all this through a poly-sci class and later a econ class. All the information is out ther, no one wants to know about it though.
