I don't think I really like chess very much.

If you like it, hey, no problem. We can still be friends. God knows I've tried to like it.

Just last night I played the latest in a lifetime of brief yet tedious games of chess. If Electronic Arts can be believed, there is no en passant in Wizard's Chess. [UPDATE 2007-0711: Maybe there is after all -- it turns out what I tried wasn't en passant. Mea culpa, EA.] Also, for a game to end in a stalemate, when the opponent has only a king and a pawn left, is totally bogus! Yes, I know that's how the rules work, but the rules are dumb.

Fortunately chess is not the only game that allows for deep commentary:

Should you master the discipline of Super Mega Tic-Tac-Toe, you can also look up the game of Mornington Crescent.
You said it brother. Checkers and breakthrough are my favored strategg games.
Go is supposed to be fairly challenging, though I've never played it or watched it being played.
King me.
I loved Chess when I was younger. I don't think I was ever good at it but I played it with my mom every chance I got.
I learned to play chess when I was younger but it just wasn't fun compared to faster paced games.
When it comes down to it I think games like checkers, connect four, go, etc can be just as mentally intense, but unlike chess they can move between depths. I can play a basic game against my nephew but I can also play an advanced game against a skilled friend.
With chess you're just sort of stuck at this deep level. I guess it's a taste thing.
I like my Chess with violence and tasteful nudity ;-). Otherwise, it's just too boring.
Stripper to E4.

I've used to play chess with my father when I was little, and was getting pretty good at it, figured out all the strategies and such. Now it just seems tedious and boring. Game doesn't really provide the entertainment that it used to. Could also be that I just liked spending time with my dad when I was little though, and it wasn't the game that was fun.
Yeah, I think the main reason it's taken me so long to realize I'm not crazy about chess is that I have fond memories of learning it from my dad.
Hrm. I like chess alot. It has deep strategy and rewards forward thinking instead of reactive play. OTOH it's deterministic game play means experienced players often simply unwind scripts against one another, and it can get tedious. To that degree, I sometimes prefer a random element. Additionally, the level of abstraction in chess is quite high and I like military simulations with a bit less sometimes.

That is why I particularly like De Bellis Antiquitatis (DBA) and Hordes of the Things (it's fantasy variant). It reflects regimental combat quite well and produces historically believable (notice I didn't use the "r" word) battles and results. I also like painting the figures. Warhammer is an okay game, but quite expensive, figure intensive, and prone to some bizarre results and imbalances in relative army power. Warhammer Ancient Battles is better, but still requires alot of figs and has some bizarre ways it handles things.
They should invent "Last Chess-Piece Standing". Kind of like chess, except that you can zap your opponent, put oil spills down on the board, and accidently trash the board with miniture asteroids.
