I'm freaking sick of AIM closing the current window any time I hit the Esc key. I get in the habit of using Esc to clear my text in DS, and then it loses whole conversations in AIM. There isn't any option as far as I can tell to override this idiotic behavior. Is there a plugin or something that will do it, or some hidden option in the registry?

It's OK, it happens to everyone.

If you have the latest version of AIM it won't lose the conversation. If the window closes and you send a message to the same person you were talking too, the entire conversation should still be there.
|
Even though I cannot help you, thats a pretty cool DS feature I never knew about :)
|
I have the pre-6.0 version of AIM, because 6.0 installs spyware (or something close enough to it to still deserve the name) on your machine. AOL decided to bundle their program with this useless crap, so the only way to avoid it was to download the pre-spyware version.

Have you ever considered using a "multi-protocol Instant Messaging client?"
If you want something small, I would suggest Pidgin (previously known as GAIM). It's what I use. It doesn't have all the flashy features, but it's fast and not annoying. Then there's Trillian, which is flashy. I've never used it, but I've heard good things about it. |
I personally use Gaim (never updated to 'Pidgin' --- AIM was stupid for making them change the name anyways). I have to say that it's pretty darn good (it doesn't eat your computers resources at all, unlike AIM, and it doesn't knock you down with ads).
I've heard good things about Trillian too, but I've never used it. |
I might try Trillian; I do like the flashiness. But Pidgin still looks pretty nice, and I happen to know from Googling earlier that Gaim did support turning off that Esc key crap.
|
I have tried both and prefer pidgin, you should try both and decide which one you like best.
|
Trillian caused me no end of problems - it was just horribly buggy.
This may be because I was running windows 98SE, however. |
You could do that in Gaim as well, or at least the last version I used. I can't say for the new versions, or Pidgin, but I don't see any reason to lose it.

I've had no problems with Trillian, but I just don't like the overattention to detail when it comes to the detriment of readability. I'd rather see text explaining options than icons explaining options, since a picture is only worth a thousand words if it was selected well.
Oh, yeah, Trillian's message logging feature let me exercise my "creep" factor and go over the chat logs I had with one of the girls I was dating (emphasis on was) to see what I did wrong. I only realised after about fifteen minutes of reading that I should probably knock it off. =P |
