Yeah, hard to believe isn't it?

Anyway, there's an idea I've been batting around for a while internally - get a hold of the Naruto source code various Naruto games use (WOTS?), and fix it up. Get rid of all the various stupid errors, make it a good, robust program.

Then let the rippers at it. Basically, I'm hoping to spread good programming practices through the ripping community by giving them a good example.

Potential pros and cons:

Cons:
- Someone wrote WOTS. It's a double-slap in the face if, not only does your source code get released by a semi-respected member of the community (Well, I'd like to think so), but they also 'correct' it.

- Rippers don't actually look at the source code, so it might not be the best way to spread good programming practice.

- I may be driven insane.

- I don't know how I would distribute it. I imagine BYOND moderators would look poorly upon me using my webspace to host the file (If a moderator could actually confirm this for me, that would be nice).

- I also don't know how I'd get my hands on this source code in the first place.

Pros:
- At least the rips are less buggy.

- May improve the programming ability of newbies to the language

- Gives forum-goers a resource to provide to people asking for 'the naruto code'.

Basically, I want to know what you think of the idea. Is it impractical? Excellent? Morally iffy?
You might want to gather some outside help, you could die! :(
You could search the hub. It's bound to be on there, amongst the DBZ sources.
Make sure to download a clean source. Some dealers lace it with some nasty shit, bro.
Yeah listen to Elation, I have had some pretty bad experiences.
I say it's a good idea, but all of the bad ideas are going to happen. But that shouldn't matter, because these cons will happen regardless of you fixing up the source. And if it helps just one person, it is more than worth the sacrifice.
Worst idea ever, JP.
The biggest problem with fixing up a Naruto game, or even PLAYING a Naruto game, is trying to figure out what exactly the game is supposed to do. I've logged into tons of games trying to figure out how to play the damn things, and I'm at a loss. This is as far as I generally get:

1: Uzumaki? Haruno? Kankuro? Ubuntu?
2: Are you a male or female?
3: Leaf, sand, moon, waterfall... what is all this stuff?
XxUltimatUzumakixX challenges LordKage!
4: How much red would you like in your hair?
There will be a genin exam in 5 minutes!
2: Are you a male or a female?
<< Help
5: Genjitsu, Nojitsu, Jujutsu?
me: Um... Genjitsu.
Use Kill Bunshins. (this is the entirety of the help file. Very helpful)
2: Are you a male or a female?
me: I guess I'll go train on that pole. I wonder who all these people are running around with the masks and sticks.
IainPeregrine OOC tells the world: Ahoy, I'm new here, can anyone tell me how to play?
XxUltimatUzumakixX has died at the hands of LordKage!
Etc.
I've actually contemplated this as well, but mainly for DBZ. I could never figure out these Naruto games, either. I've just always wondered if I should do this because I recode those things so much for ONE friend who doesn't really get to it or care about learning from the code at all. He just wants some make-believe glory and fame that supposedly a DBZ rip will bring him.

I've finally decided not to do this because it's like I'm promoting rips. The last thing I want to do is up a rip's bad name. I'm really getting tired of seeing them (thank god for the BYOND guild system--the RPG guild really needs to stop accepting those, though), and to think the newbies would learn from it is just plain dumb. I thought this initially as well, but these guys don't really even look at the code and probably aren't interested in it. My bets are placed on the opinion that the makers of these Naruto rips just want administrative abilities. Of course, there is always that one person who does care and moves on from these rips.

I feel that by making these rips more robust and workable that we will just be promoting rips even more and encouraging more players to use the source code. If the ripping community cared about learning DM, I'd bet that they'd read the DM guide or some tutorials.
If someone uses takes a game and claims it as their own, I really do doubt that they will take time to learn how everything was programed.
I like the idea. >_>
I'd give you the NBottles source, but my old computer died, so I lost the source files.

lol
I still have the source but I probally won't be giving it away. I think why people hate rips is because there are so many kids that take the games source code and claim it as their own. Which leads to having over hundereds of Naruto/DBZ games on BYOND. So just improving the games source will not help the cause but hurt it even more.
Keeping the source on your harddrive is badong. You should delete it immediately.
