There's a source of energy you guys are all forgetting...
Antimatter
I know, but if we invest in it, then it probably will be by the time other fuel sources run out...

You sort of need to get the antimatter from somewhere.
Strawgate, yes, I know how a breeder reactor works. You fail to notice that you need to put stuff in there for then neutrons to smack into it. Traditionally, it's U238, which gets turned into P239, which is fissile. It does not produce more fissile material then it uses, because it uses all the fissile material present - including that it produces. It most certainly does consume fuel, because you need to put U238 into it to get the P239 out. Basically, thermodynamics applies in nuclear reactors just as much as in real life. You need to put fuel into it to get energy out. |
Yes I did.
No it's not. The fission of the uranium, creates additional fissionable material. Read about fast breeder reactors. Correct New reactors like sodium cooled reactors actually do not consume nuclear fuel, they can use the same fuel for their entire lifetime. "The fast breeder or fast breeder reactor (FBR) is a fast neutron reactor designed to breed fuel by producing more fissile material than it consumes. The FBR is one possible type of breeder reactor. " Thus reducing the nuclear waste tremendously. Sligtly wrong No it's not. The fission of the uranium, creates additional fissionable material. Read about fast breeder reactors. Correct |
