I'm at a bit of a dilemma. Aside from Grand Theft Auto IV, I have absolutely no major reason to buy any of the seventh-gen consoles. I'd buy the Nintendo Wii (and fully intend to, at some point), but GTA4 won't be on the Wii (and it's no surprise, given that the Wii is only a bit more powerful than the GameCube)... which leaves the Xbox 360, and the mess of DRM that is Microsoft, or the PlayStation 3, and the complete robbery that is its C$699 price tag (worse, the extremely-strong Canadian dollar (US$0.926441/CAD) at present means we're paying a (relatively) large markup on the PS3s compared to the US$599).
So, I'm looking for justification. I see Saints Row for the Xbox 360, and Resistance: Fall of Man for the PS3. I see Motorstorm and Metal Gear Solid 4 for the PS3 as well, but Xbox 360 comes back with Halo 3 and Forza Motorsport 2.
So... given those exclusive titles, I can't decide which is the better investment. What do you think?
Console fanboys, have at it!

360 is cheaper and actually has a nice little Live community as is. >_>

I've been with Sony for the past two generations, but I keep thinking of changing systems. While the PS3 might manage to come out with a decent library later, the Xbox 360 has a whole bunch of exclusives and (supposedly) better running versions of current multi-console games. The fact that some Xbox 360 versions lack a hard drive might turn off some developers, but I think the PS3's learning curve and market share drives away more.

Saints Row is a lot better than you would expect from a cheap GTA knock-off. The part I really enjoy is that there aren't those joke story lines. It's one gangs attempt to take over the city. I don't run a toy store halfway through, I don't go to any secret military installations, I just take over other gangs territory. You have three rival gangs and all your missions focus on taking those three gangs down.
One thing I'm really happy with is that even when you're at the maximum wanted level the cops don't chew you up. If you're in an area your gang controls and your gang is strong enough you can hold off the police forever. They make it painful to do missions, but if you'll never find yourself stuck because you're too far away from a respray. It's a lot like GTA2 mixed with GTA3. They also switch you from driver to passenger a lot more. Driving is cool but it's fun to just hang out the window with a gun sometimes. Dead Rising on the XBOX 360 is really cool. The amount of zombies on screen at a time is crazy. The idea of fighting against a huge amount of really weak and dumb enemies is genius. I'm not really a fan of Gears of War, but compared to what I've seen of Resistance Gears is better. The gameplay is really good it's just the story that sucks (well, not even the story, just the characters). The cover system is excellent. It makes defensive tactics not only possible but very useful. If you just run out into full view of the enemy you'll get torn to pieces in seconds. It wouldn't surprise me if Metal Gear Solid 4 ended up on the XBOX 360 as well. The achievements add a lot more life to the games than I expected. There nothing worth buying the console for but they're a little extra fun. I've got a Wii, a XBOX 360 and I'll be getting a PS3 (not too soon, but odds are before the price has lowered to a reasonable amount). For a guy who didn't really want an XBOX 360 I'm pretty happy with it. Not as happy as I am with my Wii, but I'm not considering trading it in. |
One last bonus I forgot to mention with the XBOX 360 is the ability to use the controller with your PC (if you buy their USB device). You might be able to find drivers and do it via your BlueTooth or something, I'm not entirely sure. I know you can hook your Wiimote up to the PC via BlueTooth. Although that's not as practical.
Not many people care about this feature but I really like it. |
I think final fantasy will go to 360 soon since ps3 just isn't selling. Why make games for a console that isn't selling?
And if you do buy a ps3 have you got a HDTV? The money you will spend on PS3, you can spend on 360 with a super combo deal. |

360 looks sexy. However, I don't use HD or Bluray, so depending on what floats your boat you might have to sacrifice sexyness for highway robbery... I mean Bluray.

Save for MGS 4, I don't see much of a reason to get the PS3. Even though I only have two games for my 360 right now (haven't bothered to save up for more, though I plan on getting Dead Rising as soon as I can) I still think they're more than enough of a reason to go for a 360 over a PS3.

If you have any friends with either I would try them out personally. However I would take the 360 over the PS3.

You generally can't just compare numbers to determine performance, and the page doesn't say exactly what factors were compared to come up with the 1.5 to 2 times. It also says how some of its numbers are unconfirmed by nintendo or the company that manufactured the part. The Wii's peak fill rate is somewhere near 2 Gigapixels/second, and since it doesn't have to deal with HD resolutions, like the other two consoles, it's capable of filling the 720x480 TV screen something around 5000 times per second. ~90 complete fills of the screen while running at 60 FPS means that it's in no way underpowered graphically. |
The way i think about the nintendo wii is that it brings real life into actual playing. 360 and PS3 do it by graphics.

Besides all that, the Wii wouldn't allow GTA4 because it doesn't meld with Nintendo's morality or ethics, whatever those are.

The Xbox 360 has Gears of War and Crackdown. Gears of War is great, but Crackdown is too repetitive. Every mission is the same: Kill the highly protected gang leader / important gang person. The gameplay is awesome, but you're pretty much doing the same thing over and over while increasing your skills. Xbox360 has Dead Rising though, which is an EXCELLENT game, especially for zombie fans. Large areas, packed to the brim with zombies, and just about everything is a weapon. From benches to stuffed teddy bears (and theres guns, knives, chainsaws, and many other items) and everything in between. And the PS3's price is a steal. I recommend the Xbox360. |
