So this really weird thing happened today. Shaw phoned telling my mother we have a $350 something cable bill because of various instances of ordered porn. Somebody's been ordering porn on our cable. There are only three people in our house, Myself, My Mother and My Sister.
My Mother's out, she doesn't watch porn. And she's really confused and pissed off about it.
My sister's out, she's like fourteen and I'm pretty sure she's straight. She's also usually in school.
So that leaves me. 17 year old boy, I'm here in the mornings(I only have evening classes) and most of the porn was ordered in cases where I would have been home. Mostly at like 10 in the morning or something.
It wasn't me =\
I get my porn from the internet, free. Theres loads of free porn all over the internet, why would I order it? Knowing it costs ALOT of money?
So now we have to figure out how the hell this si happening, because I am royally ticked. We don't have ANYONE else who comes to the house, seriously. We are sheltered people, well cept me. But I go everwhere. Nobody comes here.
Some of these orders were done while I was home, but there was no one else in the house. So what the heck?
Can anyone think of any possible way someone is hacking our cable?

just tell your mom straight up that you wouldnt do it because you can see it for free on the net.
|
sketchy. i doubt soemone is breaking into your house to order porn - so i would strike it up with your cable box acting stupid and maybe crossing accounts?

Dialers. Do your family use IE? Tell them not to.
I've heard things about porn dialers that connect to some really expensive network or whatever that costs you loads of cash... I have no idea how it works (or if it is even possible), but uh... Ah yes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dialer#Fraudulent_dialers Seems like it only works with modems though...? Anyway, if you suspect it might be this, I suggest really tighting up security on your and your family's PCs. Make sure they're not spywared up or using IE. |
I would place blame onto the cable company first. You can easily dispute the bill. This would, no doubt, cause them to investigate which cable box the charges came from (you're referring to cable TV pornography on the nether channels, I take it), which would allow them to investigate whether there were any taps or tampering or anything like that.
Cable internet and cable TV porn don't have anything in common, so I wouldn't be concerned about your computers. |
Like what BigBoiD said, I'd straight up tell your mom I wouldn't buy porn when it's damn near everywhee for free. Everyone looks at porn, only idiots pay for it.
Since you're on cable you shouldn't even have to worry about some sort of dialer so it must be your tv. Call your cable company and dispute the bill. The only way someone could hack your tv to buy porn would be using universal remote through a window. Damn neighbours. |
Wireless. Unsecured, easy access, easy messed with. Fair and simple.
And yes, Porn diallers do exist, Elation. My family was snagged with one when someone in my family downloaded and executed one completely unknowingly. They have a tendency of muting the modem from connection noises so you don't know you've done it. But I figured that could only work with Internet you had to dial periodically. If you don't have a wireless network, you could have an active wireless card in your computers which is acting like a beacon to other networks, giving them access to your internet, maybe. |
It was something on the Cable companys part, the bill was credited and we dont have to pay it!
Yay! =D |
