I'm trying to play some older games (gold guardians, space castle, etc) but when I try to download them it says installation failed. I read somewhere an update broke a lot of older games. Is there any workaround on this, or are new updates just going to slowly brick games that have been abandoned?

You should provide hub entry links for the games you tried to install that failed. That would help determine what the solution is for them.
