BYOND Build Number: 429.99
Operating System: Kubuntu - Linux
Video/Graphics Card: Unknown
Game Hub/Link:
Internet Connection Type: 100mbps
Firewalls/Routers: I have them unsure. however.
Problem Description: I do everything it says to do when I download first the old basic version then the newest version possible I extract and make the file I do what it tells me then, when I try to join a game. It says "Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (byond) isn't associated with any program." I don't know why I have the byond file set on the desktop in a folder as far as I can see everything is set-up correctly.
Steps to Reproduce Problem: Simply try to use the byond program itself the .exe I can't execute the byond system. So I can't join games.

Ok thus far version 355 works perfectly. I use WINE however I use Kubuntu as my OS 8.04, now the problem is with version 429.99 that version when I try to log in once it locks up and then stops the application. after which I can no longer run the program. I haven't a clue on how to fix this I can't switch Operating Systems I'm using the Computer at my school specifically for programming and they allowed me to learn through byond as a source of extra credit.
Anyways I can go off of Byond 355 I liek that version I like all of byond, however this makes it so I can't see the games I am testing and so forth. I cannot use the protocol either. Quite Confused... |

BYOND 429.999 only works on the latest version of WINE. Make sure your school keeps their computers up-to-date.
I would like to say that I commend your school for using Linux, and exposing students to it. I would like to state, however, BYOND does not officially support WINE. Tom has taken a few steps to help out, because he wants it to work with as many platforms as possible, but it is not officially supported. There is, however, the Linux Guild, which is ran by other users who have an interest in Linux. Going there will net you the most help. |
Greetings Azubah.
After reading you post, my best guess is that you are trying to use a Linux native version of Firefox to launch a WINE version of BYOND. I'm not sure how this worked in the first place, but it comes as no shock to me that it doesn't work now. I recommend installing the Windows version of Firefox in WINE, and using it for browsing the hub. This has worked quite well for me in the past. Thanks Much. Danial.Beta |

Just get the windows version of Firefox. When you go to getfirefox.com there is a link on there for "Other systems or languages" or something like that.

I really don't see it hard at all to make a simple bash script to launch wine BYOND.exe [URL of World], and then simply link the byond:// to the bash script.
Too bad I don't know any bash :( |

what you said registered nothing to me for some reason. See the instructions are simple but the BYOND.exe doesn't run on 429.99 it only runs and stays open on 355 which can be good and bad. Good that it works bad that 429 doesn't work. I have WINE set to Windows XP.
A bash script is in the shell and Linux has no registry in which to leave BYOND and run from it. so that is probably part of the problem. Honestly what BYOND could do is just take BYOND and submit it to the Adept Manager to have it so Byond can be downloaded to Linux from that which would fix the problems. The program has only given my friend a virus once and it was probably from the game if nothing else. |

Sorry, but BYOND could not be added to the adept manager. At least, not the Windows version, which is what you are using when you run it through Wine. But Wine usage on Linux is pretty self explanatory, so if you can install it on Windows, pending any bugs, you can install it on Wine.
As you seem to have some confusion, let me try top explain a few things. Wine is a Windows application layer, allowing Linux to run Windows programs. It works by giving Linux libraries needed to render Windows programs, as well as a lot of background work. It sandboxes everything you install using Wine to /home/[user]/.wine, meaning everything a Windows program would need is packed away in there, including the registry. Of course, this does become an issue when it comes to things like protocol that hook into the browser. The BYOND program, however, functions quite well under Wine now. You should be able to run it manually by going to Applications>Wine>BYOND. If you can't even launch it that way, please give us a clear description as to what your problems are. Also try going to our WineHQ page. |

Well I downloaded it and when I log in to the pager it locks up then stops working. After which I can't open the program again until I reboot the computer.

Ah, OK. This is likely a result of your Wine gecko IE replacement not working. Go into your home folder, then show hidden files(its in the menu somewhere) then find your .wine folder. Rename it to .wineold(or .wine2, or anything else, just don't delete it yet).
Now, download and reinstall BYOND. Renaming your .wine folder is basically like reinstalling Windows after something went fubar. Now it should nolonger freeze up. |

Wait go into the home folder on Linux or On WINE? then rename it to .wineold?
okay I renamed it and it wants me to redownload gecko when I login to byond 429 so I did. but it caused it to lock up again... |

On Linux. You should have an icon on your desktop that looks like a house(them standard icon). The .wine folder is hidden, so you have to tell dolphin(the file manager) to show hidden files.
Renaming the .wine folder will make Wine create a new one, making you start from scratch with Wine. I say rename the folder, and not delete because if you have any other programs you might want to save, I don't want you to get rid of them. |

well it had me download gecko again and that caused byond 429 to lock up and close like before...

Sounds like an issue with your Wine. Are you sure you have the latest version? The current version of wine is 1.1.5. If you don't have the latest version, get it from http://www.winehq.org/

for some reason I'm unable to get the newest version of wine.

Sorry, but that is something you must do before I can help you further. I'm not exactly a Linux guru, so I can't walk you through installing the latest version. If, however, you are able to install 1.1.5, the Pager should start functioning again.

Unfortunately I'm not too knowlegdeable about Linux or WINE so I have to give you a best-guess answer here. If you are running under an emulator, the core issue is that BYOND's installer needs to set up the byond:// protocol in the Windows registry. Either this doesn't work through an emulator, or your installer did not run through correctly. Assuming that the emulator is not the problem, try uninstalling BYOND and then reinstalling, but make sure you're in administrator mode (at least as far as the emulator is concerned). As long as the emulator itself is capable of fully installing and running BYOND, then having the right permission level when you install should do the trick.
