Problem Description:
Every game I play, every so often it freezes, and I have to relog. If I click something, it says connection failed and my screen goes black. If I don't click, my screen doesn't move at all. I took a screenshot, I waited about 2 hours waiting for it to respond again(I waited that long for because I had to go somewhere) and I comapared the screen to the screen shot. Nothing changed. So obviously, nothing could have been loading to make it freeze. And I asked some of my friends this and it doesn't happen to them.
Steps to Reproduce Problem:
I useally play CC. http://www.byond.com/games/GoldDean/ChaoChatterz#online
I join the server with the most players. Sometimes it takes 40 minutes to freeze, sometimes it takes 2 minutes to freeze. I really have no idea what to do or when it happens. I have no control over it.
EDIT: If I just move useing the arrow keys or anything, then I click 'Icons' at the top, and then again, it is still frozen, but it brings me where I moved and all that.

Is the DirectX version the number your looking for? The other numbers are random.
DirectX 10. ----- I went to preferences and turned off "Ue graphics hardware for displaying maps" like you told me to. It still freezes. And it it only me. ----- I also was playing a game I never have before, and it still froze on me. ----- Should I re-download BYOND? Could it be my computer? Could it be my router? Could it be my connection? |
Based on the report here I suspect this is a connection problem at your end. If the connection to the game is broken, the code responsible for network communication may not realize it until you try to actually talk to the server. The fact that you get "Connection failed" upon clicking something means the connection was already down and DS just discovered that when it tried to contact the world. Since this isn't happening to others, it's something on your side.
It's possible your wireless connection is cutting off TCP/IP connections that have a certain idle time. It's also possible it's flaking out and losing signal just long enough to break the connection. Lummox JR |

So, it's a problem with my router? I sit on my couch and my router it on the other side of the wall, so could the wall be the cause of the disconnection's?

I'm not really qualified to answer wireless router questions, unfortunately. All I can tell you is that there's a very high probability that your connection is already dead when you see a freeze happen, which you may be able to verify somewhat by running utilities like netstat. Netstat may not tell the whole story though since it's possible also that during periods where the server can't reach you, the server initiates the connection shutdown and your end never gets the message. By the time you're reconnected your line doesn't suspect that anything happened. Lummox JR |

So, do you know if a new router would help because I have no idea what you said.
EDIT: I read your post slowly and I get it. But what exactly is netstat, and what will it do? |

Without any system information, it's next to impossible for us to help you. However, because you state that your issue only happens on one game, and in the same spot every time, I'm willing to bet that it's a programming error by the games developer. If this is the case, there is nothing we can do to help you in your problem. You'll have to talk to the game owner. Thanks Much. Tiberath. |

netstat is a tool that is built into Windows (pretty much all versions I've seen), that will give you information on various network things, active connections etc. Netstat is a rather complicated tool, and only runs in the command prompt, to my knowledge.
In XP, just go to Start -> Run and type in cmd, then press enter. This is the command prompt. You may need to be running on an Administrator account for it to actually start up. In Vista, go to Start -> Accessories and right click on command prompt, then 'Run as Administrator'. In the command prompt, type 'netstat -p tcp -a'. This will list all the TCP connections the computer has open. This might be a big list, if you want to make it smaller, trying closing messengers like MSN/AIM, download programs, web browsers etc. Run this before joining the game in question, and note down the results it gives you. Join the game you are having trouble with, but don't do anything. Run netstat again and spot the extra entry / entries. That will be the TCP connection to your game, note the text in capitals, it should be 'ESTABLISHED'. Finally, run netstat again just as the problem occurs, and see if that capitalised text changes for the TCP entry that represents the game. If you got disconnected, it'll probably be one of 'CLOSED', 'CLOSE_WAIT' or 'TIME_WAIT'. If you are connected, it will be 'ESTABLISHED'. Let us know how that stuff changes as you follow the instructions. Sorry that it's a confusing way of checking things, netstat was really designed for System Administrator people who've studied that kind of thing. Feel free to ask if you need something clarified about the instructions, or the data netstat gives you. |

Thanks, to everyone. I got it. All it needed was a better graphix card..

There are a couple of reasons I can think of that would account for this behaviour.
First and foremost: Does anyone else in ChaoChatters have this problem? If that is the case, then it's more than likely a programming issue. Having seen the released source, I can say there is a lot wrong with that game.
If this problem is located around you and maybe one or two others, then it could be the result of BYOND's hardware rendering. When you enter the game, open up "Options & Messages" (Right click DreamSeeker in the task-bar and select Options & Messages) and click on the "Client" menu. From there, click "Preferences".
If the fourth check box "Use graphics hardware for displaying maps" is checked. Try un-checking it and re-login to the game. Play it out and see if you continue having this problem.
If all else fails, try playing another game and see if the same results happen. If so, we'll have to dive deeper.
[Edit]: Can you also tell me your Direct X number? To get that, go to Start -> Run, type "dxdiag" without the quotes and it should tell you on the window that pops up.
Thanks Much.
