Not Feasible

They have to pay Amazon/etc for hosting anyway, so why shouldn't they pay BYOND? Wouldn't more money make development of the platform faster? Even if it's just by forcing them to use a referral link to AWS, which they're going to use anyway?

That sounds disastrous. Too much micromanaging is a bad thing.

This would kill SS13 overnight. Absolutely not. It would also make byond dev *slower* as the one dev is now trying to also be sysadmin for the hundreds of servers hosted.

They have to pay Amazon/etc for hosting anyway, so why shouldn't they pay BYOND? Wouldn't more money make development of the platform faster? In order for this to be profitable for BYOND, it would make the expense of hosting higher for users. The enhanced exposure this gives BYOND as well due to the content hosted on servers they run is also super not great. People already spend a lot of time attacking Lummox for not going after nefarious activity that is outside of his purview, and the time spent managing optics in order to prevent bad actors from damaging the platform with misguided campaigns in those situations is time and energy that isn't being put into development. BYOND running any kind of hosting service on their own isn't itself an awful idea in its own right, but the externalities of doing so are probably not worth the low margins of such a thing. --Moreover, the perception of acting as a middleman to make hosting more expensive for end users wouldn't be good for the platform's trust with its developers even if the idea of forcing official hosting were eschewed in favor of offering this as a convenience. |
I'm in favor of making more money; I don't make a lot. But this idea would never fly for a thousand reasons.
Above all else, however, it'd be spitting in the face of the communities that support BYOND the most. Disrespecting them by pulling some scummy move you'd see Unity pull is not something I'd ever care to do. |

That's by far the worst suggestion I've heard for making profit using byond since forcing ads (in the games themselves) I'm all for ads and "sponsored content" on the website, such as devs trying to promote their game over others, or if BYOND partnered with Amazon, or Cafepress or something, and sold "hip" merch. |
