I need to extract a .sit archive. However, if I am to download the supposedly-free Windows version of StuffIt Expander as pretty much every website on the internet suggests, I am actually required to download a not-free-at-all trial version of StuffIt Standard edition which includes StuffIt Expander... and they can't be detached from one another, in a move so blindingly arrogant that it could have only been pioneered by a Mac-oriented company (name any other common compression format out there which doesn't provide freeware extraction utilities).

I've been searching through page after page of Google results trying to find some sort of utility that's freeware (I don't value one file to extract at over US$30...) that allows me to extract from a StuffIt archive, or at least convert it into a real format, but am coming up bupkis. Which is ordinarily what you should expect when looking up a goat's butt, not on the internet, though I'm sure if I look long enough I'll find a site where the two aren't mutually exclusive.

The question -- if it's not obvious -- is, "Where can I get a freeware (or shareware) program that allows me to extract .sit files that won't arbitrarily expire on me?"
Sure enough, as soon as I post complaining that I'm unable to find anything, I find something.

Then click 'Download Now'

Just incase.
It says it's free.
Gah, no, that didn't do it. It extracted a beautiful 8 MB file into 207 KB, leaving several null files in the extracted folder.

Okay, there are about three things wrong there.

1) You gave me a link to a Mac binary.
2) It says $49.99 to buy, free to try.
3) I wouldn't have made a post complaining my butt off about their pretentiousness if I didn't already try downloading StuffIt Expander, only to discover I was actually downloading trial version software of an entirely different product with only a small "Note" on the page clueing me in. =P

To prevent anyone else from having to subscribe to their mailing list (yes, you have to subscribe to get this URL), the URL at which you can download the trial versions of StuffIt is:

The official software can't even extract a file in its own format?

As it turns out, I need to be able to extract the resource fork from the .sit. For reasons I can't fathom, StuffIt doesn't allow you to do this at all.

I had to dig through their FTP site to find a directory full of archived versions of StuffIt Expander... and even then, the bloody system destroyed all my file associations.
Aww, sorry. =(
Coulda sworn it just said 'Free' in the availability thingy.
No worries. I was a bit irritated that a company could sell a software archiver product and still get people to buy it even though it was absolutely necessary to buy the software in order to extract those files. If someone tried to pull that on a Windows PC, their sales would be rather marginal to say the least. This wasn't actually the case before they switched over to Allume, but now it definitely is... bait and switch, I think.

I'm exhausted now because I can't usually sleep when something gets on my nerves like that, so I was in Grump Mode (it triggers on nights where I haven't had sufficient time in Sleep Mode, or any time my brother is stuck in Pain in the Ass Mode).

For anyone specifically curious, I was looking to convert an ancient EV Nova plugin from Mac format to Windows format. I eventually found StuffIt Expander 6.0 from ftp://ftp.allume.com/pub/archive/pc/StuffIt_Expander, which was exactly what I needed to extract that file.
I know this is a bit naughty but here http://crackserver.com/search/?n=50&q=stuffit

* please don't kill me :(
So the problem is solved?

The resource fork is a file-system concept. I think that Mac OS normally handles that part. NT has something similar called alternate data streams, but it's hardly used for anything beyond ACLs, and isn't easily used.
Stuffit is a dying format. It's an abomination. Thank goodness Apple is effectively killing it off by standardizing on open formats like zip and tar.

That said, if you still need assistance, perhaps one of those derogatorily named "Macphiles" would be willing to help. I know one whose fee(0) is quite reasonable. ;)
I was being derogatory towards Aladdin/Allume and the snobbish air that Mac companies seem to have, for sure, but didn't mean much ill-will against the end users themselves. =)

But yes, problem fixed. StuffIt Expander 6 lets me extract resource forks onto the hard drive, which I can then drag and drop onto EVN's plugin converter to produce .rez files containing the resource forks in a format that Windows PCs can understand (provided the program uses RezLib, of course).

I do think EVN is awfully bass-ackwards for relying on Macintosh resources instead of, you know, creating an actual file format for their game. But that might just be my twisted world view talking.

Did you know that Raczak's Roughnecks (obvious reference to the Starship Troopers movie) will open fire on your ship if they catch you transporting Guinness barrels? ;-)
