Q: Yo. What's "ionisation" mean?
A: Yo! Ionisation is the excitation of molecules and elements directly produced through the acquisition or relinquishment of additional electrons, resulting in a state which can no longer sustain electrical current in a predictable fashion and which causes particles to gravitate through a substance to the nearest cathodes or anodes in an effort to dispense or absorb additional electrons as a natural responsive attempt to neutralise the imbalance, yo.
...Um. I am being told to clarify. The perceivable effect is that when an ionisation blast or beam impacts your wayward vessel, yo, the bombardment of electrons will effectively electrify the hull and cause your vessel to suffer general electrical failures and brownouts. This results in the performance of your unit seriously degrading, with numerous deadly disadvantages: weapon systems will be rendered inoperable, drives cannot electrically-regulate and thus produce only half as much thrust, and the unit will experience frequent lack of responsiveness, with maneuvers suddenly disengaging for up to several seconds before spontaneously resuming with no apparent reason for their lapse in efficacy, yo. Thankfully, the disruption is of only temporary consequence, yo. All components are built with systems which cause themselves to de-ionise, as during regular use ions build up naturally. Yo. It is simply a matter of time before a vessel that has been disabled through ionisation has de-ionised itself enough to restore normal operation... yo. Furthermore, a vessel is only vulnerable to ionisation if the electron stream can adequately penetrate the projected energy screens surrounding its metallic bulk; a vessel with functioning shields is immune to being disrupted, yo.
Better still, the technology of de-ionisation is not overly complex, yo. It is possible to safeguard your transport through the installation of one or more Ion Deflectors, yo, each of which increases the capacity of your vessel to absorb free electrons without suffering from adverse effects. If even these fail to vaccinate your platform from undue harm, the disease can be cured with Ion Dissipators which augment the rate at which your vessel de-ionises itself. Yo.
