I think it gives a nice utilitarian look with Windows XP. No frills, no gimmicks ("United Furniture Warehouse! Bump bump!" (can't forget the bump bump)).
(To pre-empt the inevitable "BMP on web" complaints, Windows XP is intended for BMPs on its desktop only. Using a PNG or JPEG would require more computation on Windows' part to tile it across the screen, which would mean that a so-called utilitarian background would also be a major CPU hog. A 3.0 KB bitmap isn't a bad use of bitmap. There are uses for everything, even "goto" -- the trick is knowing when and why they're useful and when and why they aren't.)

Hey, that looks really cool when tiled! I'm gonna steal it and use it as my background too. :/

That's a good point about BMP backgrounds. I'll have to remember that if I ever find a picture worthy of being my desktop background. =P
Now you just need to go through and edit your icons to fit in with the theme. |
If you like the basic XP theme, try these visual styles:
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/9240396/ http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/20901820/ They both have that basic feel while still being pretty. Sure, not as easy on the resources, but %95 of the machines that can run XP wont take a noticeable hit from this. |
FOR THE LOVE OF LEGOS, WHY DIDN'T ANYONE TELL ME ABOUT THIS???!?

Evedently version 2.0 has some problems with my graphics card. The mouse causes problems which make it almost unsable. PAIN. I tried lowering my graphics acceleration and it didn't help.
I'm a sad panda. Before I had computers I had Legos. Even after computers, Legos remained a big part of my relaxing time. I have created all kinds of crazy creations with Legos. |
