Lesson learned, don't give to those who only take.
Our efforts were not acknowledged last year, so we didn't encourage our community to subscribe and donate this year.

A thumbs-up emoji can go a long way!!

I know we don't tend to see eye to eye on much, but I feel it's important to share something here. I have some level of empathy for what you are projecting that you feel.

Producing resources for this community can often feel like a wasted effort. There aren't a lot of us. A lot of the people who use this community lurk instead of engaging directly, because there is a history of being attacked for showing the slightest bit of hope or enthusiasm.

What you guys did with your video tutorials was excellent, and they are still linked to within my community for new users, even by people who do not like how the last year has gone.

The reality is just this: The negative feedback stands out. It's what you remember most. When you do something valuable for people, it often goes unrewarded, but that doesn't mean that it is unappreciated. I've produced a lot of resources on this site, and I've gotten a lot of thanks over the years. But I've also caught a lot of shit for it over the years. It can be hard to remind myself that the spite that we receive for what we do is unavoidable, and isn't where we should focus our energy.

If your support and enthusiasm for what you do is contingent on being equitably rewarded and praised for everything you do, unfortunately there aren't many avenues in which you will find both success and happiness. The way people work is unfortunate. Our tanks are filled much more by spite than they are by positivity.

As for me? My motivations have never really fallen in line with how the community reacts to what I do; While the spite feels bad, it never stopped me, because the praise was never the real currency behind what I do. What I do is an externality of my own compulsion to understand how things work. The resources I produce are a product of my own curiosity and autodidacticism. I'm actually an incredibly slow learner because of how deeply I am compelled to understand things before I onboard any new information. The resources I write are a result of me trying to teach myself, because I've found my own understanding is enhanced when I attempt to shape ideas into a lecture. It makes me question my assumptions and truly examine what I think, and why I think it. Me posting those resources is just recognizing the inherent wastefulness of my process of learning, and wanting to salvage just a little bit of the time that I spent teaching myself a concept by making the product of that process available to others.

I appreciate the effort you put into this post, but specifically what I was referring to was us rallying people to financially support the website (not the videos).

Had Lummox responded with an expertly-embedded MIGHT GUY image, we would have certainly donated again this past year!
