Sadly, since it's not my server, I can't give any messages as to what is going on, or any idea as to how this can be replicated.

It seems like they might have left just as they died, or just as the wave was being completed. I've seen it a few times where the game is paused on a wave and nobody is there. When you join it just kickstarts the game and unpauses it. Not sure if that has anything to do with it, but just putting it out there.
