Any sim of my life would have to be a god game.

Stuck between those two choices, I'd have to say life sim. You can't do anything particularly divine because you're limited to the almighty Simolean. You don't particularly control these people's lives, either, because they have free will and rudimentary artificial intelligence (yeah, I said it, rudimentary -- The Sims' AI is pretty poor, all things considered). All you do is try to guide them to a particular career or to earn a profit. You also make the most important strategy decisions, like whether they should quit a job or get a new job, but that's more in the reins of a "financial planner" than a "god".

Life sim. As JT said, you are limited by the holy Simolean.

My joke aside, I'm going to weigh in by calling attention to the opening of Jtgibson's post: "Stuck between those two choices..."
It's really neither. You are neither directly controlling the individual Sims, nor are you an all-powerful figure. It's a "life sim" in the sense that the Sims have virtual lifes... but that's not the game. The game is in managing their lives, which you do in a way that doesn't really map to real life or godhood. |
It depends on how you play it, I'd say...
When I played it, I micromanaged everything my Sim did... I never left them to their own choices (and in fact, if my Sim made a spontaneous decision, I cancelled the queued action and either gave him something I deemed more important, or selected that action again if it was what needed the immediate attention... In this respect, it very much becomes a Life Sim... I have placed myself into that single Sim (anoyone else in the house was mostly left to their own devices, unless I wanted to abuse them to handle some task that I didn't have time for) And yes, played in this manner, handling every second and function of that Sim's life the game very much becomes a simulation of Life (slave to the almighty TIME) Perhaps not quite realistic, but it conveys the very real problem of having more Life maintenance tasks than one has Time for... If you let your Sim(s) run "free" and just mess with their environment (and perhaps give them the occasional "Go Here and Do This" command), then you're playing it closer to the "God Game" style... Though since your power is still rather limited (and not just by money, you're still limited to a select, relatively small list of abilities), it's not quite playing God... So, my vote went to "Life Sim"... |

You know you can turn free will off, right? That way they'll stand around waiting for orders. It can be a little annoying in situations where you don't realise something is happening and rely on your sims task list to alert you (ie, there is no doorbell so if you're not looking at it you can only tell someone is there because your sim automatically goes to greet them). Personally I see it as a life sim. If I considered The Sims a god game I'd have to consider things like Syndicate Wars and Final Fantasy to be god games as well. In both those games you're in control of what multiple characters do. Although in Syndicate Wars you actually are a character in the game world so I guess doesn't count. In The Sims you can have a single sim (as I often do) in which case I could consider myself playing as that sim. I consider myself playing as a group of sims like I consider myself playing as an entire army in Battalion Wars. |
