I'm trying to think of a good name to refer to a specific class of limb that belongs to a creature. The best I can come up with is "Weapon", but that assumes the force is particularly strong when applied, and gentle pushing and pulling forces are quite possible.
A "whatsit" can do the following:
* Apply a force consisting of a push against a target.
Example: a dolphin's tail, a boxer's arm and gloved fist
A "Motivator" can do the following:
* Apply a force consisting of a push against a target.
* Support a being's weight.
Example: a leg
A "Gripper" can do the following:
* Apply a force consisting of a push against a target.
* Attach to a target.
* Apply a force consisting of a pull against a target.
* Support a being's weight.
Example: a dog's mouth
A "Manipulator" can do the following:
* Apply a force consisting of a push against a target.
* Attach to a target.
* Apply a force consisting of a pull against a target.
* Move and rotate a target along all six axes in order to position it in a certain way.
* Place a target in a specific fashion in a location or against another target.
* Support a being's weight.
Example: a human arm with ungloved hand
For instance, a human has two Motivators and two Manipulators. The human's Motivators are its feet. It can support its weight on its feet, or on its arms if it needs to, and can use its feet to push open doors or kick them down. Its Manipulators are its arms... it can use tools, pull open doors, push doors shut, throw objects, lift items, put items on, etc.
Do you have any good names for the "whatsit"? A whatsit is basically something that can push or push with explosive force -- like a dolphin's tail or a balled fist that has been wrapped in a boxing glove.
Forcer is kinda neat, although it's not a real word. If worse comes to worse I'll use that one...

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/forcer
Though I'm not suggesting the Dictionary.com is a universal standard, but it's reliable enough for me. :) |
Huh! Again, failure to fact-check bites me in the ass. Still, it's not a very common word -- this is certainly the first time I've ever heard it, and I know lots of rare words and phrases, like "mellifluous", "effluence", and "peaceful resolution".
|
Well you got the word from a hick. Our vocabulary has low standards anyways. Doubt was expected. ;)
|
Here is one that is abit iffy, but it might work out. Shuffler
Shuffle seems to have many definitions that could confuse people though. |
Presser - a thing that presses or applies pressure
Might not sound as magnificent as applier though. Applier could be a referance towards anything, be it pressure to make-up, potatoes to tomatoes, even an idea. |
GURPS uses the term "striker" for a limb that cannot support weight or manipulate, though maybe it lacks a certain mellifluous effluence... just like "weapon", it implies there's no peaceful resolution.
Exerter? |
push or push with explosive force....... <_< >_>. I don't think I'll suggest that for fear of being banned from a blog :O. Of course, I think only males should have a whatsit.
|
@Hedgemistress, digitalmouse: "Exerter!" That's brilliant. I like "Appendage" as well, but that's more generic than I'm looking for, and I'm trying to go for the whole "verber" sense for something that "verbs either a little or a lot". Exerter is perfect because it gets the exact idea across -- you can exert either a little or a lot. (The funniest part is that "Exerter" really doesn't show up in the dictionary.)
@Elation: Pusher was already suggested. ;-) I didn't like it because a "pusher" implies slow and constant force to me. @SpikeNeedle: I don't tend to ban people from my blog, but I do delete posts if they cheese me off or I think they're completely off-topic. That's rare at best. =) |
Erecter, but now that I think about it, that's more for things going up than out.
|
You know, looking at this system, I'm starting to consider the idea that maybe "Grippers" and "Motivators" and "Manipulators" and "Exerters" and such are actually just the standard parts, and that certain special body parts should be represented specifically in terms of those sub-actions. For instance, a dog can pull with its Gripper in its mouth, but can't push worth a damn (except for gripping harder).
Since I was planning on having body parts exist as amorphous lumps with flags which determine what they are, I could probably do things like "BODYPART_GRIPPER & ~BODYPART_PUSHFORCE". |
*edit*A forcer is what first comes to mind past a pusher. Since a dolphins tail creates a force that helps it move and a push is a force just as much as a punch from a boxing glove. I'll think more.
Pusher, Forcer, Shover
