Right, so yea is a reputation thing, not a matter of quality of the content, which is the bizarre bit. It encourages this notion that you would parade what you do for BYOND (actually valuable or not) for some sweet reputation. For me anyway, this seems an odd way to do things. Better to have a system that would reward the contributions themselves, not the people. Like say ... game fans, the system we have for following games.

The whole notion of a "dislike" system for posts is just ridiculous, considering nothing ensures people don't spam dislike something to turn people off.
Either have it with nothing, or have it with a "Like" option only. |

Keeping the Like option promotes positive reinforcement and keeps people optimistic and upbeat. The reason I think Posts themselves should be Likable as well, is in case some important piece of information presents itself that maybe someone needs to see. Therefore if someone posts an incorrect statement, and another person corrects him, the more correct response would (or at least Should) gather more Likes, bringing it to the attention of everyone participating in the thread that it might be a valid blip of info, or at very least, something that might entertain everyone.
In the case that a Flame War starts (And I know that it will), A rule should be invented in the case that people begin liking hateful, or otherwise inappropriate content, that it is considered Instigating and can be punished severely. One thing I notice in EVERY Flame War between two people is that there is always a troupe of trolls whom say things between the two and instigate further arguing and hatred. I find that it's best to just ban these instigators and worry about them no longer. Harsh? Possibly, but it would cut down on unintelligent, name calling, fights that people have. Intellectual arguments however should be allowed and daresay instigated themselves. There's nothing more entertaining than seeing two people rationally and PEACEFULLY solving a problem together and coming to a sole conclusion, whether one or all of them are completely wrong. |

I can't tell if you support the idea or not. Argumentum verbosum, and such.

I'm supporting the Like option of course, however I'm suggesting that there should be rules along with it as well. Such as liking Obscene, Vulgar, or Hateful content should carry the same punishment as posting it yourself.

Anyone who's spent any amount of time on Reddit for example can tell you this is not how the internet works. As Stephen pointed out, "likes" or "upvotes" just go towards popular comments regardless of quality. This means you can expect puns, memes, and minor grammar corrections to receive more votes that whatever else you had in mind. This is a bad idea, it's an attempt to fix what isn't broke, it's a waste of time and resources. The only improvement BYOND forums need are sticky posts. Besides that one single feature they shouldn't be changed. The BYOND forums are already better than most forums on the internet specifically for the lack of signatures, BBCode, rich-text editing, and every other stupid annoyance jammed into forum software. |

That's ridiculous. Considering how easy it'd be for it to be a misclick due to mouse malfunction, etc.
I don't think this is the 1930s - you don't have to be penalized for crimes that make no sense and aren't even "crimes". |

Likes should obviously be able to be taken away as swiftly as they are received. If a post contains something that isn't quite obvious, then 10 people liking it because they're naive doesn't really matter. However if someone says, "Hurr hurr, Dis guy iz gay cuz i sed so" and collects 14 likes, the people liking the post are only doing more to instigate the arguing, trolling, flaming, ect.

I wasn't making a feature request, read my base topic post, and you'll understand my meaning behind this. I'm not trying to fix anything, I was just pointing out some random fact that happened to be popular among the community, not taking over BYOND one forum option at a time. Please people, If you're going to post in this thread, for the love of god will you at least read the topic post? As for sticky threads, I would vote for that. That would be extremely handy for threads and posts that may explain something in BYOND not covered elsewhere, such as the Guide or Reference. Not to mention moderators now have an easy way for community members to see the latest news and rules, In case you don't check your pager from time to time. I would put a lot of money on the fact that at least 70%+ of the community couldn't tell me exactly how to view the forum rules without looking for it themselves. |

Um? No? Again, this isn't the 1930s/1940s where you're going to get in trouble for crimes that don't even make sense.
You clicked a little button. Boo hoo. If we have a Like button and we're dictated how to use it, what's the point of it? |

Unfortunately people are lazy, a very sad fact of life, therefore unless you give people a "Lazy Button" they won't bother participating even that little bit.

There's a certain question of whether if they can't manage even 10 relevant and new words on the subject, is their participation what the forum would even want? I suspect not, personally.

Alright, well let's say no one is punished for liking a post that obviously breaks rules. People who like the Flame War posts, are still instigating the argument, and just want to see what happens next in the Drama-fest we call The Internet. At any rate, I guess it really doesn't matter. It's not like mods would enforce such a pathetic rule, nor would they very much care. At any rate, Thank you for the opinions. I wasn't aware that it was such a popular topic among the community.

True, I apologize, carry on. It sounded as though you were belittling me for suggesting a "Like" button. I am sorry for not attaining your true meaning before commenting.

Again though, who the hell really cares? If people are going to be Liking a post during a flame war, it takes an idiot to continue it because someone liked something you said.

Considering people have gotten warnings for saying "This.", "I agree with that", and such, even with other content in the post, yes, something is kind of needed.
Hell, not even warnings most of the time, but people act like you're Satan and replied to the wrong post. |

Very true, therefore it boils down to the maturity level of the two participating parties, which, unfortunately as the past can give clear directive, has never been very high to begin with. At this rate, it appears as though the internet is doomed.
