I've noticed a lot of projects come and go due to a lack of pixel-art, and I Was wondering, would it be beneficial for me to perhaps start making pixel-art tutorials.
They won't be art tutorials, I won't teach you how to draw, or about anatomy, I will -try- teach you the basics of pixel-art, and if you're working with small enough art, generally drawing concepts won't really matter.

I don't know exactly how good your tutorials will be, but I'd love to learn from a good tutorial. Go ahead!

Usually no one buys assets for BYOND games unless they're like, 19 and up, or have a job. You're forgetting that BYOND is intended to teach people how to start off becoming a game developer, and work their way into the real world.
There are great tutorials out there, yes, but what's wrong with making more? People raise a lot of questions about pixel-art in BYOND (specifically smaller icons; someone argued with me that the smaller an icon, the crappier it will look. How is that true?) Reinventing the wheel? Please explain how I am reinventing the wheel, by making tutorials for BYONDers? Obviously tutorials outside of BYOND are not helping people, because they're there, yet the amount of known pixel-artists on BYOND stays at a number that I can probably count. Yes, a reorganization of the website would help, but I don't think putting tutorials on how to make huge 128x128 fighter character sprites, or how to pixel gigantic one frame characters will help much for BYOND. |

If people aren't going to make use of external tutorials, they're not going to use internal ones either. It's not that people can't find pixel art tutorials, they just don't care about improving. The problem to be solved isn't the lack of pixel art tutorials, its the lack of interest in improving your own abilities. Reinventing the wheel isn't always a bad thing, but in this case it doesn't solve the problem we have. What would be beneficial is to give people a reason to care. Take a screenshot from am existing game, and show how some little details could greatly improve it. Convince people that its worth their time to care about pixel art, at least a little bit. |
Rather than reinventing the wheel I think it would be better to just reformat the Developers section of the site. It needs to list off easily accessible DM tutorials as well as off-site pixel art tutorials. As it is now it's just kinda clustered and I can't really imagine anyone finding what they need without already knowing what to look for.
