Say someone bought me a gift membership. Can they take it away when/if they want. I looked through the forum and found an old post saying that it can't happen, but that post is years old and people tell me that it has changed.
If the transaction is final and complete, then no, you can't take away a membership. However if the transaction is still pending it is possible to cancel it. The best way to do so is by contacting the BYOND staff and asking for a refund.

Once it's final, it's final.

They could also file a charge-back at pretty much any time, which I'm sure would negate the membership.
You probably shouldn't be accepting memberships from strangers in the first place though, there's a 99% chance its a scam/fraud of some sort.

It's more reasonable to ask for a refund before you file a charge-back. Charge-backs hurt BYOND due to how credit card stuff works.

Yea, it would be, but the average 12 year old's parent who got their credit card stolen doesn't know or care.

We entertain refund requests when they're legitimate, and we prefer that to having to deal with chargebacks for obvious reasons.

A chargeback is pretty much an instant ban for the purchaser. We don't put up with that crap.

Most business I know that operate online ban/block users who do stuff like that without first contacting them to explain the situation.

If it was a fraudulent purchase, then the person didn't want the service anyways, so why does it matter if they ban them? If they're just abusing the system, I'd say the ban was deserved.

I don't follow your logic.

A chargeback costs us money. It is a net loss incurred for no good reason. Primarily this comes up in circumstances where the person has used a credit card fraudulently. It is completely against our interest to continue to do business with someone like that. It's no different from banning a shoplifter from a store.

Its pretty much ridiculous that anyone would issue you a credit card. Obviously you have absolutely no understanding of anything. As we went over, if you purchase something knowing full well what it is, and then decide you want a refund for absolutely no reason, then you shouldn't be getting anything back in any way. Honestly, I can't see how any time somebody files a charge back that they aren't just blacklisted from ever getting a credit card again, obviously they aren't competent enough to handle having one. Even if the charges they're filing against were truly fraudulent, all that proves is that they aren't capable of keeping track of their own personal information.
