This week snow fell, I was out in my sisters car with my girlfriend. We were going under 5 the speed limit the whole time and went to my Mom's house. The car kind of slid into a curb going around a corner at 5MPH and bumped the curb and stopped. No visibale damage was seen, but we could feel the alginment was off.

Well now my sisters's boyfriend is saying that we ruined the transmission and needs $2,000.00 to fix it. Any thoughts or ideas? I need to know if this is pluasable.

EDIT: I don't know, thats why I am asking BYOND. This guy, no one trusts him or likes him, but now I have like 10 people telling me he is full of bull donkey and not to listen to him. I am going to have to talk to my sister about all of this. Is it possible to have the mechanics look at the car and let me know, if the transmission is ruined, when it happened? I don't know these things.

Also, last week, it was around 7AM, it was cold and my girlfriend was getting ready to bring me to work. As soon as she started the car, it smelled like gas and smelled burny. She told my sister about it, but her boyfriend said it was just the car he was working on the night before in front. Is it possible the tranny cracked and they just ignored the signs?
The only way I can see this being plausible is if the transmission was already in terrible shape and well passed it's replacement date.

Hell, a friend of mine has done less damage to his vehicle (well, in terms on inside components) hitting a Kangaroo at 70kph. Sure, he ruined the outside of his car, but all he suffered inside was a small fluid leak, that cost like, $60.00 tops to fix.

Then again, I'm not a motoring enthusiast, so I can't answer with any sort of accuracy.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but aren't YOU your girlfriend's boyfriend? I mean, I'd hope so at least. You're trying to stiff yourself two grand? You know, it works better if you still other people, you gain money instead of breaking even.

Did he have to replace all the blinker fluid too? (Since it's not perceived well in text, </sarcasm>)

The transmission of a vehicle has precisely zero to do with the thrust angle/tire alignment, which is all this manner of low-speed collision may have done to the vehicle. If you owe him anything, it's $40 for a computerized alignment.

Th transmission issue was likely preexisting and brought up by the mechanic who was looking the car over, so this guy is either really stupid, or is trying to scam you out of a whole lot more than you could possibly owe for what you claim happened.
I had very old worn out tires, and during a summer rain I slid around a corner into a curb going about 25 mph. I ended up having to buy a new wheel, two tie rod arms, and a frontal alignment; a total of about $550* after we wheeled and dealed. I would think your cost would be something like this, but probably much less as I doubt a 5 mph collision could bend your wheel up like it did mine... The transmission could have theoretically been damaged by this I'm sure in some bizarre way, but it seems likely from your story that the transmission is not the culprit at all.

*price included two new front tires, too

Does that happen a lot in Australia? We hit a lot of deer here...

Your sister certainly knows how to pick 'em, doesn't she?
First of all, that's a little expensive for a transmission (I had my replaced for $1500, my mother had hers rebuilt for $1800). Check around, ask what other places are charging for that make/model. There's generally transmission specializing shops, so check with them as well as general mecahnics.

Second of all, an accident like this would not damage the transmission. I'm not a car expert, but think of what can go wrong with a transmission: the teeth on the gears break, the gears themselves break, the solenoids go bad, or something got disconnected. Could a small accident like this do that? Probably not.

Third of all, this is exactly what I just said: an accident. As such, it should be covered by the insurance. Remember, insurance is on the car, not on the driver. It doesn't matter whose car it was and who was driving.

Fourth of all, this is probably better asked on an auto forum. I can't say I have experience with a specific one, but googling around may help.

Yes she can pick em, Don't get me started on that whole topic. This thread will grow to #1.INF length. Also, there is no insurance on the car. We live in a area where no car insurance is required, as such my sister is too cheap to have it put on her car.

As far as the transmission goes, I found out more today. Apperently, he looked at the car in the dark, swore he saw transmission fluid leaking, but when he checked today, the fluid was topped off. He is still being a jerk about it, but I think he realizes he isn't getting no $2,000.00 for the car. But now he is also looking at new tires and break pads and stuff, which I told my sister already we aren't paying for.

good that you kept checking into it. as others have mentioned, there would have to be a pre-existing problem with the tranny if bumping a curb would cause it to break. it would have also been noticeable that the car would not shift properly or make lots of noise while in motion (ie: grinding noises for example).

if the car is front-wheel/all-wheel drive, alignment is a concern with the transmission, but only at the points where the wheels connect to it.

if (aside from the alignment) the car runs fine, don't sweat it. alignment shouldn't be too costly.

It happens more than it should. Koala's and Kangaroo's tend to really damage cars. Trucks however, will remain unharmed. Most animal hit-and-runs are performed by trucks.

I can't drive anywhere out of my city without seeing at least two dead Kangaroos. =(
