I've recently found out that there is a lot of demand for web design in my area. I have several clients lined up who have agreed to letting me host for them. Does anybody have any suggestions for a hosting site? While I'm at it, I'd like to be able to install BYOND on it so I can host my own BYOND games from this server. I'll need PHP, MySQL, and a way to set up clients up with their own email/cPanel. I'd like for the server to more or less pay for itself with 4-5 clients.
So, any suggestions?

If you need shell access, I doubt you're going to find many cheap hosts allow game servers (they drain resources). From what I've heard about godaddy, I definitely don't want to go with them. How much is a server with shell access? I'm OK with spending cash. I plan on having enough clients to where I can split most of the costs between them. |
I recommend Slicehost. They have different "slice" sizes which give you computing resources, and you buy or drop them as you need them. Thus, it scales with your usage requirements. They have virtualized or dedicated servers, so you always have real root access to your box and can install whatever Linux distro you want.
If you can give up being able to host BYOND servers and just want PHP and MySQL for cheap, you can't beat NearlyFreeSpeech.NET hosting. They automatically suspend your server resources to disk when it's not in use, so you only pay for resources you actually use. If you get low traffic, you'll be able to host your website for pennies per month -- and even if you get slashdotted, your server will stay up and it'll cost you a few bucks, and then your costs will drop right back down as the traffic drops back down. So basically, if you want root access and dedicated RAM, Slicehost is awesome, but if you can deal with shared RAM and less control over your box, NFSN gives you unbeatable prices. |
I don't absolutely need to have shell access, but it would be cool. Slice host looks really affordable. I think I'll give them a try.

I go through godaddy right now but they're customer support isn't so great. The box itself though works wonderfully, just you get absolutely no help, even with a box that's misconfigured out of the starting gate:P Too bad you have to prepay 3 months, 60 bucks to drop just to try it out is steep. How long have you used them? |

Every time I hear about somebody signing up for GoDaddy, a little bit of my soul perishes. Too bad you have to prepay 3 months, 60 bucks to drop just to try it out is steep. How long have you used them? I don't use them for my own website - I'm low traffic, so I save a lot by using NearlyFreeSpeech.net. However, I know and have done development work for people who have used SliceHost for years and have had positive experiences. It's very affordable compared to the competition, and the SliceHost guys are very knowledgeable and supportive. They built their whole system from the ground up, so you aren't dealing with some second-string engineers. |
Does SliceHost let you install BYOND on it? If so (which, if you have true root access, I imagine you do), then the value behind it is amazing per its price. :)

In fact, it's the most reliable I've ever used. Just their customer support is pretty lousy when things go wrong. I can't really fault them for it since they say they don't offer software support on their servers. Other than that I've had no issues, and their free control panel is halfway decent. Nothing compared to cpanel, but it's not terrible by any imagination. I'm a fan, but I'm also a fan of saving money, so I'll be moving to slice as soon as I've got 60 bucks:) Note: I'm not talking about their regular hosting. I've never used it. I'm only talking about their virtual dedicated hosting. |
Have to admit, both look pretty sweet. The hardware behind the slices looks reliable, but can you attest for the upkeep on the pay-as-you-go nearlyfreespeech.net? It seems to me (in today's capitalistic society, anyways) that a service like this usually won't be so reliable. Are you getting quality for the price, or are you just getting the web-space?

Are you getting quality for the price, or are you just getting the web-space? I've been hosting the website for a student group's Battle of the Bands on NFSN and it has performed admirably. Very little downtime, responsive server, handles thousands of hits, emails, and SQL queries per day, and I've had quick and high-quality customer service every time something isn't working perfectly. It's been a joy to develop for since NFSN will install almost anything you want as long as it runs in CGI mode, and they give you full SSH and SFTP access with fake root. And get this: the whole operation, including domain registration, has cost less than 15 bucks so far. It's been running under load for months. Value for money? Hell yes. |

[GoDaddy] really aren't that bad. Just their customer support is pretty lousy when things go wrong. That's exactly it - when the poop hits the fan, does GoDaddy have your back? No way, José. Somebody doesn't like your website and complains to GoDaddy? They take it right down. Technical problems? Too bad. A company who never goes to bat for its customers deserves to fail. The only thing keeping GoDaddy afloat is its marketing. (Which is where it spends all the money that should be going to customer support!) ![]() |
dude if ur interested in hosting my game text e at [email protected] ........THX my key JonJonVAlgana

You can get a dedicated/virtual dedicated host from somewhere like godaddy. Keep in mind that they offer no support on their servers, so if you don't know how to run linux, you might want to consider the windows box for extra cost;)
