Lt. Pain could be referring to IsByondMember() checks, which are just like passport subscription checks.

Yes, but that's far from the only thing you get with being a BYOND member. In fact, that's probably the least relevant thing as I've only ever seen client.isByondMember() used to greet someone an thank them for being a BYOND member (mainly in chat programs).

Lets say u see a really good game you have head about on byond, but to play on the good server you need to pay $5. Would you ever pay to play, and if so how good would the game have to be?

Paying for a game on BYOND is plain rediculous. This is seriously not the type of place to charge people for.. Even if it is only 5 dollars.. I would never pay 5 dollars just to play some 2D game. I just about played every well-known BYOND game.. The only one worth paying for would be Final Fantasy Online.. Good staff, no bugs, awesome gameplay. But it is free, so when I see all these other games charging for money, I just look over and compare it to FFO. Simple as that. Plus, I wouldn't know where the hell my money is going to.. Remember most BYOND games are not created professionally, your 5 dollars could be going to their new shoes.. I know how people are here, if they are getting money for a game that took absolutely not money to make, it's obviously not going back into that game seeing how the game never needed money in the first place. Which goes to show that it is going into their pocket for whatever.

Which is your problem. Most of the well-known BYOND games suck. Its the neglected ones that are really cool.

That is not necessarily true just so you know. I have seen some insanely skilled people who are willing to work for free, several of which have (or still) worked on commercial games. One of them right now works on IMVU and use to work as a programmer on Guild Wars. As far as programming skills go, I doubt there is a single person on BYOND who even comes close to comparing to his skill, but provided he is not busy he is more than willing to help people with their projects.
Onetime I also saw someone spend... Between $4000 - $5000 on their amateur game... Lets put it this way. The money was not well spent at all, and the game wasn't even good and I doubt I would have played it even if the game were free.

In short, money is not everything when it comes to making a game.
That and I doubt the people on BYOND who possess genuine skill would work for you (or anyone for that matter), and those that would work for you aren't particularly skilled (I've seen plenty of people on the BYOND website trying to sell their services, and the skill of these people has been laughable at best. I even remember people making fun of one person who started a topic trying to sell his services).
If you ask me, if you ever do make a game with BYOND that would earn you any sort of revenue then you'd be better off just spending that money on yourself. Because the game would have to be excellent as it is to make money and the community on BYOND isn't exactly one I would trust or pay to work for me.

Anyway, personally I would only pay money to play a game that I knew was good. What it is made with is unimportant.
But I don't remember seeing a BYOND game that I would pay to play (that is not to say all BYOND games are bas as I haven't played them all, and there are certain genre of games I wouldn't pay to play regardless of how good they were because they are the sort of genre I am not interested in playing, but of the ones I have played, I wouldn't have spent money on any of them). But if there were a game on BYOND that was good and I liked and had to pay money to play, then I would pay money to play it.

He has a point, like many things the well known stuff sells out while the truly great things stay hidden. McDonalds is famous, but the burger shack down the street is prob better.

XD thanks
Personally I'm a huge sucker for cool games that come with map editors. An exploration/puzzle/adventure game, for example, that came with the ability to make your own short puzzle/adventures would be really cool.

The only thing better than a game with cool randomly-generated content is a game with a player-based that builds even cooler stuff than the random generator.

I play many neglected games as well, don't make judgments.

Coming from the guy with the low quality avatar. Just because I choose to not give my money to someone who will just use it for crap does not make my statements "fail". Really how old are you? 15? Grow up, grown ups don't pass around words such as fail so loosely.

Hehe. Hehehaha. Hahahahahaha. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. BWAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAH. Oh god, wow, ahahaha. Do you not buy a 3D game unless it has shiny box art, too? Or if a book has a blank cover do you think it automatically sucks? Who am I kidding, you probably don't even read books. What are you, a shallow, nineteen-year-old girl who got through school by playing off to the horny male teachers?

Just because I choose to not give my money to someone who will just use it for crap does not make my statements "fail".

No, you failed because you correlated how fun a game experience can be with how many dimensions the game has. Whether it is two dimensional or three dimensional it does not matter. I'd want to play Scream of the Stickster or Super Mario Bros. more than I'd ever want to play something 50 Cent: Bullet Proof.

Really how old are you? 15? Grow up, grown ups don't pass around words such as fail so loosely.

I'm seventeen, and I suppose I shouldn't use them in such a vague statement, even though it was hardly vague. Some people won't be able to make basic correlation to figure out the context I was using them in. Okay, if you think that's the case, then here. This is the version that even the lowliest troll will be able to figure out:

At the point (in time) where I (Popisfizzy) read the text on the monitor (computer hardware component used to display data from a computer graphically to a user) and realized that it was conveying the message (idea, thought, etc.) that a two dimensional game (a videogame with two dimensions of dimension, normally moving left-to-right and up-or-down or north, south, east, and west) is inherently (implicit, built-in, etc.) less fun than a three dimensional game (a videogame that uses a set of movements similiar to our realities axes of movement) is the point at which I felt that your (forum) post (at http://www.byond.com/developer/forum/?id=626836) had gone from being a post described as "Eh." (implying that the post was mediocre, and I'd prefer not to read it again) to "Fail." (meaning that the post was completely awful, and I would avoid reading it again unless I really, really had to.

So because of his forum avatar you begin judging the post at hand, right?

Just because I choose to not give my money to someone who will just use it for crap does not make my statements "fail".

No, because you said that you wouldn't pay to play a two dimensional game. Basing games purely off of graphics is why your post began to dither and die in the same sentence. Basing something off of graphical quality is a definite "No".

Really how old are you? 15? Grow up, grown ups don't pass around words such as fail so loosely.

How old are you? Making assumptions about an individuals age and claiming to be a grown up with the sort of argument you've presented is only going to make you look incoherently retarded. My suggestion is to not reply to my or popisfizzy's post. It'll save you some humiliation.

I'm nineteen and I throw that word around loosely as well.

What's more, the quality of someone's forum Avatar doesn't make them any less of a person than someone who goes out of their way to make a flashy one. At least he has a forum avatar.

-- Back on Topic

I paid for a subscription to Laser Wars after playing it only once. I had the extra dollar or so in Paypal and thought "what the hell". I've only played the game about three times, but I still think I got the value worth for my dollar.

Fact is, I -would- go out and spend $5.00 - $30.00 on a BYOND Game. Because I don't care much for 3D graphics and what not. If a BYOND RPG has a really good story line I can get into and a kick-ass game play system. I have absolutely no quarrel with paying for it. Then again, I have a job and money to waste away on such things.

The problem with BYOND is, it's full of immature kids who are either too lazy or too young to get a job. And thus, they can't afford to pay for a game. I dare say, if they were employed, even making minimum wage, they'd be more inclined to pay because they have the money to throw away.

Just to identify the transactions I've made on BYOND that could be considered buying something:

$5.00 to buy a permanent Hedgerow Hall subscription
$9.90 as a donation for Incursion
$3.00? to buy DragonSnot
$3.00? to buy a My Life as a Spy subscription
$2.00? to buy access to the Purple Team on My Life as a Spy
(before MLaaS adopted the "Gold" subscription model)

Those were the games worth paying for, in general.
In response to QueenBitch
You obviously have no sense of value. $5 is what I spend at McDonalds one night of the year, it's not a lot at all. $20 for a BYOND game is pushing it, but $5 is a perfectly logical amount for any 2D game you enjoy on BYOND.

The true thing to take into consideration is how much are children and teenagers able to spend? They don't have credit cards/paypals, and they usually don't have sources of income. This would be the reason to make your game excessively cheap or free, not because it isn't worth money.

Do you have any idea how long it takes to make even a 2D BYOND game? If you got paid professionally to make something like this, you could pull off an entire years salary worth of time developing it. How could you say the authors shouldn't get something in return for entertaining us after all of their hard work?

I agree with your other points, but I'm not so sure about this one. I remember being a teenager, and at that point if I wanted something enough, I'd get the money for it, one way or another.

The main issue is that its such a hassle for someone who's not setup to pay money online to get setup for it. I don't image most children are going to have things setup to allow them to purchase things online easily, since I doubt their parents would entrust them with that ability. Teenagers might be another story depending on their age, but whatever the case, its the hassle involved that makes things seem more expensive online.

Incidentally I'm not setup to spend money online either, especially through an untrusted source (as in the case of a purchase requiring that a game author add me to something manually). That's why I never buy anything online except plain tickets. :P Handing my card to an employee at a fast food joint is easy. Figuring out what's safe and what's not and then setting up an account to do it online, isn't.

That being the case, it shouldn't really matter if what someone really wants is $5 or $20. Although I really don't think most BYOND games would be worth $20 even if I only had to hand my card to an employee.

I think it's wonderful that Fizzy can burn you in an immature manner and still be respected more by others.

Speaking in a mature manner is worthless if your argument sucks.

It's hard to understand their position if you live in a different area. I know around here it's near impossible to get any sort of regular income until you're 17, and nobody is going to spend the tiny amounts of money they get from chores such as mowing the lawn on a BYOND game.... That money would inevitably be spent on something like dating or music as a higher priority. If not, then it certainly wouldn't be normal behavior for a teenager :P

But yeah, the main problem is having a method for paying for it. Paypal isn't allowed for anyone under 18 (unless you're cool like me and get one before they put in restrictions), and getting your parents to trust anything online enough for them to use their credit cards is near impossible for many.

That's why I miss the old days of BYOND where kids would run around buying anything on BYOND with BYOND Dimes as if it were candy. It was pretty easy to simply earn BYOND Dimes in another game and a no-brainer to spend it on another game, even when you're little.
