About how fast would a decent speed be for hosting byond games? I recently had to switch from broadband to DSL, and due to how it needs to be setup, had to connect wirelessly. So more specifically since I haven't had a chance to test, is 54mbps a decent speed for hosting?

I doubt it'll be more than 10 players(if that many XD) on any of my games I host, but here's the results:
Download: 591 kb/s Upload: 98 kb/s Ping: 795 ms Its kinda foreign to me, but its seemingly a huge difference from when I had broadband.. |

It may be my rss feed reader and msn running, but I guess I'm used to the spoils of running a lot of stuff with broadband..0_0

I doubt a RSS reader and MSN would do it, I have AIM/MSN open and my brother is playing Call of Duty 4 online in the other room:

Yes, that would be pretty bad speeds, but the ping just can't be right. A ping like that would mean gaming would be impossible.

Funny thing is, I got the fastest DSL service that bellsouth provides and I just wanted internet asap, so I might just have to invest in a better router. But until then, I'll retry the speed test again or something..Seeing as you guys says my ping is bad, I don't know what that could be; I only had msn, Feed Reader, and of course Firefox(yep, I converted from IE XD) up to run it.

Nah, I'd say the likely case is that it just happened to have something going on while you were trying to run the speed test. Those numbers are far better than the last and actually pretty good. I wouldn't try to host too big of a game on that, but you could easily run a server with 15-20 people on it. Your speeds are about all you can hope for in consumer level Internet access.

Yer, that was pretty much my thoughts on it. I'd like to point out it drop to about the same as a 56k connection between 5pm and 8pm (GMT) Mon, Tue, Thurs. But all other times its that full 30k - 40k upload and download.
So... would someone who knows about servers/hosting tell me whether I should be using this connection to my advantage? ~Ease~ |
O_o, what, do they have a direct connection to the test server??
I highly doubt you get those speeds in real world situations. Try connecting to US servers or other servers around the UK and then show us your score:P |

First off, 54MBPS isn't your internet connection speed, but rather the speed that your network connection is running at. To find your internet connection speed, visit a bandwidth test website (I prefer Speedtest).
What speed is good enough for hosting BYOND games? That's a tough call -- there are a lot of variables to be taken into consideration, such as how much traffic the game actually generates, and how important the speed is in the first place. For something like Chess, you could host on dial up speeds with little problems. If it is an action game however, people will be more prone to complain about your latency. Check your your ping when you run the test at Speedtest -- it'll give you some idea of your latency. Of course it won't be entirely accurate for your players, since you then have to add in the variables of their connection and location as well (high transfer rate doesn't mean low latency! Look at satellite connections).
