What is the best free Anti-virus detector/scanner/etc.
Not sure about the best, but I use AVG from http://www.grisoft.com. I've only had one virus it couldn't remove, but in that case, I doubt any av program would have removed it.

Free won't get very far.

I have never used that but I hate when people say that free software is always worse. I would use AVG.

I've had pretty good luck with AVG myself. To get the free version, it's easiest to go to http://free.grisoft.com.

NOD32 is highly recommended by many, but I've never tried it. It's also not free, which would be the reason I've never tried it. There is also ClamWin, an opensourced virus scanner. It, however, has not been up to snuff with my expectations so far. I'm hoping it will get better, but not holding my breath.

AVG is good against protecting viruses, not against removing them. I would suggest getting AVG as an active protection, while using Superantispyware when you think you have an infection. Superantispyware is perhaps the best one out there. All the other programs can't compare. Maybe the only competitor would be Webroot's Spysweeper, which is pay to use now.
