...which immediately means that I'm not allowed to join my friends in a game of "Space Station 13", simply because BYOND Staff failed to maintain their server.

I hate it how we have to rely on the BYOND Hub for everything. Do you want to play a game? Let's ask the BYOND Hub first. Do you want to publish your game? Again, let's ask the BYOND Hub!

And what if it's down? Then you're screwed, just like me right now: I can't play the game because the hub is down. Not just that, but others can't play my game as well. Not that there's much to play, but it pisses me off severely knowing that any connection attempts to my server will be rejected simply because the hub is down.

This brings us to the reason why I'm posting this. I want to see a backup hub which can take over whilst the main hub is gone. Either that, or the functionality available to properly disconnect a game from the hub with a much simpler interface (rather than the .configure crap hosts have to do now: most of them don't know of it's existence and without the pager I can't tell them how to do it).

Why is BYOND Suite so tightly integrated with the BYOND Hub? It should remain only partially connected. I don't care if the BYOND Hub collects game data, but at the very least allow us developers to authenticate players elsewhere.

Bah.
Uh, I don't want to say much Mr. Moderator, but this IS a suggestion...

If you don't like it either Fav all the games you want to play everyday or leave byond theres no point crying about it.
OMFG like others said if you wanna play fav the game. And also ... why do u have to whine ... the rest of us deal with it and so should you. There isnt anything they can do about it so too bad.

If others cant play your game cause the hub is down then Dont Host It! DUH

Uh, dude, marking the games as my favorite games isn't going to change anything. The BYOND Hub still needs to authenticate my key, and if it's down, it cannot do this.

And why the heck should I need to leave BYOND? I'm trying to play a game which is not related to BYOND directly here. I shouldn't be affected by their servers going down!

But okay. Once the BYOND Hub permanently goes down and all there's left is a binary copy of 4.0 or whatever the latest version is at the time, I'd like to see you try to properly host a game without it going "no hub! no hub! the sky is falling!".

This is exactly something they should do about. Everyone has to rely on a single server being online JUST so they can connect to someone's server.

I'm spending a lot of time making my game, and I'd like to see people connect and check it out. If the BYOND Hub is prohibiting this, I'm not happy. No, I'm not going to stop hosting the game because ONE stupid server went down, okay?!

It seems you're both completely dense. Can't you get the point here? I'm not mad at BYOND Staff because their server went down, I'm mad because there needs to be a server in the first place! A backup server which would take over incase the main one dies would be sufficient, and it would be even better if we had the hooks in place to override the BYOND Hub. And by that I don't mean client/authenticate. That variable will also shut off some useful security. It's just that games should not try to authenticate to the hub if it can't connect to it. But once it goes back up, it should start authenticating. At least then I can be rerouted to the server I'm connecting to properly without having to try to google the hosts' key in the hope that I'll get their MSN or AIM from it.
I've never had a problem connecting to things when the hub was down, as long as I knew the IP and port. Obviously the byond://key.game stuff won't work because there's nowhere for it to get the address information from.

Not sure why you're having trouble, but I can honestly say I've been able to login to things just fine during hub outages.

"BYOND Central is not accessible."/"BYOND BUG: Failed to certify." is often seen when this happens, because the host can't certify the user. At least it happened to me a few times, which is annoying.

This is very annoying, since virtually every time you connect you're using a BYOND URL.
Which is why I think there should be a better interface for the "History" (servers you connected to) as well as some kind of caching feature (?) to cache BYONDized URLs.

But true. If IP+Port connections should be working properly, then I rephrase my suggestion: make a better interface for the recently visited games, possibly having a bigger list and supporting the new BYOND Pager program (the current list is too small and doesn't always list things, possibly because DreamSeeker isn't doing something).
so you can't connect to any game if the hub is down? wouldn't this make it impossible to play a game on a LAN that isn't connected to the internet? i'm not sure that i understand your complaint.

you could have your game, while being hosted, report the IP address (and other info) to a web server, which can display a web page listing each game being hosted. games could also report to the site to say why they are going down. maybe the host needs to reboot, then the site could tell users that the server is rebooting and they can check back in a few minutes. you don't have to remove a server from the list just because it goes down unexpectedly. if a server goes down after being up for a month, there's a good chance its coming back up. hub or no hub, players can check your site to find hosted games.

Players don't like to visit other sites except for BYONDs when handling BYOND games: they'll only goto my site if the hub is down, and once it's down they'll of have forgotten the URL already. :\

maybe players just don't like your game that much.
Sorry if I'm being rude with this.

but seriously, very few BYOND game websites actually give players a reason to go there. most sites just include a description of the game (which is already on the hub page and obvious to anyone who has played the game) and some screenshots (which are also obvious to anyone who has played the game).

if the website offers players an easy way to find and track the status of their preferred server, they just might use it.
Can you not just get the host to turn off hub authentication during the hub downtime? There's a Dream Seeker command you can enter to do this, though I forget what it is off the top of my head.

Doesn't help with DD hosts I guess.

I know it exists, you know it exists, but does the host of the game I want to join know it exists? One can only hope.

That, too.
