It seems that lately, the oldbies have becoming ruder, the newbies haven't been reading the DM Guide, people are getting seperated.

A few of the BYOND Admins (not naming people) have been acting abnormal on the forums...
BYOND Admins should be helping people, not making rsc extractors for people!

I think BYOND is getting less "community-oriented", we need to go back to roots!

People are less kind now, and the "well" of programing and iconists willing to just design a game because it's fun, don't see any of those anymore.
There is nothing wrong with BYOND, it's just changing. This so-called "downward spiral"(which it isn't, really) started to develop itself since the introduction of BYOND members, paying for the pager(that's how it was seen) had an impact on BYOND, since then you see much more flames, much more fights, conflicts, etc. The BYOND members community is very unstable, and most of the people there have an nice flame for their breakfeast, lunch and dinner.

I really hope BYOND 4.0 will be just as impressive as it sounds, much more people will get the motivation to start programming and to ditch the flaming.

But you shouldn't be worrying too much, you're looking through the dark side instead of the bright side!

Yeah but, that's the thing.
Too many people are programing games without the knolage to do so, that's what's cluttering up BYOND.

People are creating games, then asking under Classified for Programers.

I might just go to a "Helper Programer" status, since I can't make my own game due to lack of icon-ists.

How do you know there aren't people who do all the work themselves? What you're saying is just like saying "Why do I see only garbage in the garbage can!?" :P

The only reason for why I make my games, is because I love to make people happy and I love to see how people react to something that I created.

I love making games.

And, yeah, Squeegy is an example of a newbie who doesnt read the DM.
Some oldbies ARE getting rude!

Some of them disappeared!
AbyssDragon, for example!

AbyssDragon = nick.cash (awesome name BTW)

I don't see any evidence of Oldbies getting ruder, but perhaps this is because I don't frequent these forums as much as I used to.

I do all the work myself ;)
I've noticed this, but I really doubt it's caused by BYOND members. It's probably caused by the fact that BYOND is so appealing since it makes the creation of games easy.

Like you said, the quality of those games are what's killing BYOND's community. I myself have flamed quite a few nubs. =p

I wonder if there just might be some connection there. Hmm...
This sounds like a great idea for a game, good luck.

edit: For clarification, this was originally posted in Design Philosophy, so it was funny.

Having been busy with most other things in my life right now, I can say that this just isn't true. I've noticed a few spats here or there, but otherwise it's pretty much life as normal. I've been around for seven years now and we've always had the same troubles.

In the very beginning, DUNG was more or less a haven for mature people (with some exceptions, myself included (!)). A large portion of the immaturity came from the introduction of younger players who were attracted when various DBZ games were made. Even then, however, we still have a large number of great people who came along as a direct result of various fan games on BYOND, DBZ games included -- this is why people went from stereotyping every single DBZ fan as an idiot to just calling trolls DbzFreaks instead. Even that has fallen out of fashion, too.

Otherwise, I haven't noticed many changes. I know for a fact that I've personally become a bit more bitter over these last few years, completely as a result of stress in my personal life, but otherwise it seems to me that BYOND is working just as it almost always has. =)

Well, to say BYOND is going downhill is kind of biast.
It's more acurate to say...
Some game's playerbases are going downhill.

Example; I walk into wiz_chat, ask if someone is available for an iconing position, and this is what I get in return
Person A: No your a ******** retard, get out of here you piece of ****.
Person B: Yeah you ****tard.
(Person B is Xeal.)

Wait wait wait. Can I be both Person A and Person B? That seems more like me. Don't you think so?

I wanna be person C who is never there because Converse is a much better place. =D

/me's first played game on BYOND was Zeta.

/me started programming in DM after his first session of Zeta(had to get offline; couldn't use the DM Guide. Yay for DM Ref and YourFirstWorld|StepBYOND---especially StepBYOND, for prompting to use the Ref so often).

/me thought Zeta was some sweet graphics editor or something, because he sucked at making his own graphics and noticed a considerable difference between his own and Zeta's.

/me asked on forums how you make Zeta icons.

/me was flamed.

/me grew out of Zeta.

/me is now me.

Well, the tiniest subset of the population -- the trolls which we're all familiar with, whose names I won't mention because it's just not polite to do so -- isn't representative of the population as a whole unless it's a random blind study. =)

But I do agree that said trolls are making the BYOND community look a lot worse than it is, because these trolls happen to be particularly loud...

And I am person D who agrees with you.

Im an oldie, but not at dm. there's no reason to have a community thread if there are a holes shooting down the newbies with their remarks. I almost stopped all work on my first game after a cavalcade of dumb, smart-arsed replies to a simple question.
come on guys, get it together, no one can do all the work! a community is about sharing, not just ideas and bits of code, but little bits of code and icons. It's also encouraging the new guy who knows nothing or little, and wants to learn. If all he gets is bad news and no help, he will either stop being a part of the community, or become a mean bastard who wont help anyone!
If I cant, or wont help, I say nothing.

You're an Oldbie? By that train of thought, I must be an Ancient! /sarcasm

Hell, I've been here for about three years and I consider myself not even intermediary (can't program worth crap.) You joined in May of this year, so no...not an Oldbie.

I hear this argument so much, I don't know what to believe. Maybe you're right, or maybe this is just another joust to authority, like what we constantly see posted.

I'm not sure what you're talking about with this. Could you give a link? If someone made an rsc extractor, it was either someone who wouldn't help people anyways, or he had good intentions.

People are less kind now, and the "well" of programing and iconists willing to just design a game because it's fun, don't see any of those anymore.

Are you talking about people who will work on others' games for free without benifit? I think you're in the wrong, here, because if someone thinks a game is fun, often they are willing to help. If not, they are probably just a very busy person and need to compensate for hours of work lost.

Usually this argument comes up because people complain that they can't get a professional programmer for their stupid Naruto/DBZ hybrid, or they're developing something without showing promise or something so generic that no programmers would want to work on it. You know what I did when I was able to assemble a whole team of good programmers, graphics artists, and web designers? I posted a very large post explaining my game, and when they joined the team, I gave them so many game design notes that there is no way they all read through it. And even my team fell through.

One problem I DO see is that there aren't any new programming gurus emerging from the masses. Anyone who makes non Fan Games anymore have pretty much been here for years and years or haven't been here long enough and often lose motivation to stay.
