I think that we all should get a day off from school on 9/11 to reflect upon the events of that day. It should be considered a national holiday.
Yes?

So someday, people will say "oh, yeah, next Tuesday is Sept. 11th... FREE DAY OFF!", like we do with all of our current national holidays?

You seem to have picked up the general point pretty quickly.

I don't think so.

Uhhhhhh, maybe explain your reasoning?

Many people have died in other events and we do not have international holidays.

Don't see how that is exactly relevant to my post.
He did not say international, he said national. As in, only the USA. And when has any event caused so much trouble other than 9/11? |

Sorry XD my bad. I am sorry.
I don't know much events that went on in America. - No one else say anything about my mistake now :P |

Which is exactly why it shouldn't be made into a holiday... That's the kiss of death for remembrances of everything else... It should be remembered for what it was, not simply turned into, "another day off, woohoo!"
|
But, it's like a week from Labor Day, if anything it could just be made into one holiday. Don't need too many national holidays at one time, look what they had to do with February.

True, Im not sure what happens in the US, but over here we generally have a few minutes silence to reflect upon it.
Anyone who was more closely involved in 9/11 would take the day off. |

And when has any event caused so much trouble other than 9/11? nationally? how about the early european settlers to North America for bringing fast-spreading disease, and later on the U.S Army for just plain slaughtering as a means of land aquistion of millions of Native Americans? don't see too many national holidays for an event that overshadows 9/11 by several orders of magnitude. oh wait: i know why there aren't any - it's because of guilt. |

Where there is National Native American Month... I think.

Perhaps a national holiday, but definitely no day off school. Really, I don't think it deserves a nation holiday. People die constantly. Just because a decent number died at one time does not mean they should be put up on a high horse. I realize that a lot of people where effected by the deaths of 9/11/01, but many people are effected by every death. The only thing that made the deaths of 9/11/01 special is that a large number happened at once.
I do agree with SSGX who said that we need to remember 9/11/01 because we shout not forget that we are not safe. But over time it will become habit to be safe. He used locking car/house doors as an example. I don't know about you but when I get out of my car, I click the little button on my key chain and lock my doors, even if I am at home and my windows are all the way down. It is habit. The same goes for my house door. As I step outside, I click the lock on the knob. I do this every time I walk out, regardless of if I am leaving or not(I have locked myself out more than once this way). 9/11/01 was a good reminder that the US is not invincible, but we make too much of a deal out of it. People die, it is a fact that comes with life. |
No, we should have to go to school, but we should have to watch the unedited version of one of the major networks' coverage of the events of that day (Above a certain grade level, let's not frighten the kiddies). That day must never be forgotten.
Oh, and someone should make every congressman and senator watch it too, every year. Some of those guys need a reality check. --Vito |

National.
Not the country, the nation. The Native Americans were seperate from our nation. I don't see why we can't just let that stuff fade into the past. It's bad, yes, but there is nothing more we can do. Should the Germans feel guilty because of the Holocaust? |

If someone was really effected, their parents could call them in sick and they could go to the graves/memorial services.
