I still use individual IM programs for the various protocols because I like being able to keep them separate from eachother, gAIM is a great program, but there are simply people who don't like programs that access multiple protocols -- I still use gAIM on my Linux box because it's the only one that runs without slowing down my system (XWindows slows it down enough!).

It looked just like this.
http://themuffin.net/gaim-needs-new-hand-icon.png I like AIM's compact name layout. I'd take a screenshot of it but I'd have to edit out the screen names and that would take out exactly what I said I liked about it. I downloaded an older version of Aim, where they still didn't add those stupid advertisement avatars in message windows. The pop-up announcement of when people logged in wasn't something I missed. |

It now looks like this:
http://members.byond.com/Smoko/files/buddielist.jpg That's using both MSN and AIM. I've grouped my MSN and AIM accounts under the one display entry, and that can be expanded to show both or just the one. |

Is it possible to toggle off those jumbo MSN/AIM icons?

If you mean the ones showing the protocol each user is from, I dont think so.
But nothings stopping you from editing them out and compiling your own version. |

I wouldn't know how to do that. :<
Oh well. Thanks anyway. |

I've been playing around with Gaim abit to see if I could anwer your question.
I've changed it from a "I dont think so", to "You most certaintly can!". On windows you would do the following. 1: Install Gaim 2: Browse to the install dir > piximaps > gaim > status > default 3: After getting there, you then rename the picture file of the protocol identifier you want removed. (Eg: msn.png to msn.pnga) Then your buddy list would look like this: http://members.byond.com/Smoko/files/buddielist2.jpg You can disable the buddie icons from the preferance menu, but that seems to stop it from displaying the buddie list when you reload it. I guess you could replace the files with blank images instead of renaming them, allowing you to disable the buddie icons. |

Okay, I think I'll give it a go now. Thanks.

No problems. Here's to hoping you stick with it. :)
Also, replacing the files with blank images just made it look ugly. But choosing the "Show display pictures" option doesn't hide them from the buddie list anyway, or so it would seem. If you like them little popup windows that show when ever someone signs on(plus a whole lot of other things), I suggest you give Guifications ago. Link: http://guifications.sourceforge.net/ |

There are two other great screenshots of gaim. And that is also the link to portable GAIM, take it with you on any rewritable removable media. Great for jumpdrives. |

Try oldversion.com or olderversion.com. I'm not sure which one. One brings up a website with older versions of programs. While the other brings up a creepy website with dating for old people (at least the last time I saw it).

Like I said, I don't know. Too lazy to check the links (and a little weary of picking the wrong site). Check for yourself.

Aah, Trillian. Gaim is better these days. Trillian used to be the best, but Gaim is now better by far. Gaim and Trillian Pro are about on par, but can you guess which one is pay-to-play? That's right, pay to use an instant messanger. I don't think so.

To be honest, I would rather miss out on the games and voice + video and save my resources and use multiple IM protocols at once.
