Well, maybe these games are staples of the gaming community like Tetris. But these games are fun (and free/free demo) nonetheless, and I suggest you check them out if you haven't already.
Soldat - Fast paced shooter from a side view. Excellent game, complete with internet play and you don't need to pay to get the bulk of the games content.
Rumble Box - A fun, beat-em-up, with nothing but blocks. Now, you're not throwing blocks, instead you are made up of boxes, with spheres for hands. You might be thinking, wtf? But trust me, it's fun.
Armadillo Run A physics based puzzle game that's reminiscent of The Incredible Machine. You build structures to try to get the armidillo to a certain part on the level. The realistic physics allows for many, many solutions. This is one of my favorites, and I only have the demo! >.<
Plasma Pong - This game is colorful... and awesome. It uses detailed fluid dynamics to propel the ball back and forth in the classic pong playfield. It's got an awesome song, too. This may not have the most lasting appeal, but the concept is just great. If all you wanna do is see something unique, check this out.

Haha... I forgot that the game isn't actually purchasable just yet. I believe he said, on GameDev.net, that he is working in some of the final touches, and won't release it until he's done with those. Sorry.
|
Don't forget Ragdoll Masters. It's fantastic fun- apparantly it has one of the most complex physics systems of all 2D games, and it's fantastic fun to play with a friend!
|
I see. He really should have mentioned that on the website. =)
Edit: Okay, I found the gamedev.net page; he reckons he'll have it for sale in 2 weeks, for about $20 USD. Not bad! Especially considering I have my semester break in exactly 2 weeks time... =D |
I'm in my first year at the Australian National University.
|
Wow, that school blows mine out of the water. I'm even embarrased to mention what college I'm attending. haha. I bet it's tough there.
|
It is a bit tough, yes. Right at the moment I have assignments due every week from here to doomsday. =P
QUT looks okay, but I bet it isn't as good as ANU. Number 1, baby. Number 1. ;-) |
Yeah, that is sweet, too bad I can't share my work with you guys. I made a sweet contraption with it. It is hard to explain, but it works like clockwork.

Hell of Sand, an edited version of the Falling Sand game I posted about in my journal some time ago. I found it quite addicting, and relaxing as well. The one I linked to is the small version, because that one acts a little faster and smoother too. |

This one is better- done in C++ and has stuff like torches, embers, and steam (water + fire) that rains back down again. It's about a billion times faster since Java is slow! |
Plasma Pong - This game is colorful... and awesome. It uses detailed fluid dynamics to propel the ball back and forth in the classic pong playfield. Wow. This game is superb. It's simple and addicting and beautiful all at the same time. |

Fun little thing to go along with it. |
How the bleep are you meant to buy the darn thing, though? I looked all over for a purchase link, or even a price, and neither appears to exist. I give the guy an A+ for the game, but F- for the marketing strategy...
