Nothing, Microsoft is trying to get the mass with some form of protection.

Windows One Care is an anti virus, firewall, antispyware sute.

Is it even safe to use it?
Yes, as safe as any other program.

Does it provide me any protection?

That’s what it's made to do, The AV is based on the old RAV engine if i'm not mistaking, while the anti spyware is just like windows defender. The firewall is a two way, unlike the one built into XP.

like a swiss-cheese condom.
My big problems with that are as follows:
1. I bought an OS from them, paying too much as it was
2. Half of the spyware/adware/malware actually runs though the holes that Microsoft left in the first place
3. I refuse to pay to keep my computer safe
4. Why should I trust them to create decent security software if they can't even secure their OS?

I don't trust Microsoft was it is, I am not going to trust them to do a good job of cleaning up after their own mess, they never have in the past.

I have yet to find anything that SpyBot/Adaware/AVG cannot find and fix or give me the tools necessary to fix the problem (Spybot has some great tools hidden away in it, and their site has even more great tools)

I realize that not everyone can use those tools at the proficiency that I do, and for them I say: http://www.bluepcsolutions.com. If people would just take the time to learn about their computer, they could protect it. If they would just use their brains, it would be protected.

I love windows XP, mines 3-5 years old? for 200ish dollars, thats fine for me. It was a great idea for me, its easy to use and small learning curve.

2. Half of the spyware/adware/malware actually runs though the holes that Microsoft left in the first place

Well, as long as people are gunna use operating systems people are gunna abuse it. Its like anything the defence slackes behind the offense. The defence can only counter something that they know about in advance.

3. I refuse to pay to keep my computer safe

You don't have too, dont look at porn, dont download files off emails, dont download random files, and your fine.

4. Why should I trust them to create decent security software if they can't even secure their OS?

You shouldn't need to trust them, anything that happens to your computer can usually be traced right back to the user themselves.

Yes, and while you're at it, don't use the internet at all. That whole unsigned activeX on Internet Explorer and all of it's wholes can cause so many problems.

I can surf porn all I want, and should be able to. There SHOULD be no way for a website to infect my computer unless I give it permission. However, Microsoft doesn't secure it's software enough, I can get infected just by browsing a page. I should not have to pay for Microsoft to clean up its own mess. I realize that there are idiots out that that will click "Yes, install this random software off a random site", and those people should pay, pay a lot of money that is. It is called a stupidity tax. But smart people, like me, who enjoy porn and other activities normally targeted, should have have to worry about unsolicited attacks on their machines, and if there are, should not have to pay to clean up someone else's mistakes.

Granted, I don't have to pay for them to clean up thier mistakes, because I can do it myself with the great tools provided, but fact that they are selling bug fixes is what gets me.
I don't know how you people can get so worried, or even have so much trouble..

3 or 4 years ago I got a burnt copy of Windows XP home edition from a friend for $10.00 and I have used that same copy up until now. I have never ONCE updated it and I also have never once had a problem.

I have windows fire wall on, Zone Alarm Firewall on, SpyBot:SC on and update those programs reguarlly and do a vircus and spyware scan every day while I am sleeping.

I also use FireFox.

aside from the occasional virus (which I get from download WAREZ) I have no problem at all.

Firefox has help keep my computer so clean. I had spyware everyday from IE, but with FF I barely ever have a trace of spyware, and the only protection I have is Windows Firewall.

Disabling 3rd party cookies will normally stop tracking cookies, one of the only things that affect FireFox.

Ok, you go ahead and do that. While your at it, why dont you throw your computer out the window? Do you read the things I type? Or do you just pull out all the important long words and compile them into a sentence? You can use the internet, but if something says "Free Porn" Its free to begin with, but your computer is gunna pay. You don't go on the street and get free food from people you don't know, because you don't know where its been. Be careful on the internet, and you'll be fine.

I look at free porn quite often, I don't have any problems. Perhaps you just don't know how to look at some websites?

You're quite haughty.
If there are free alternates, "stupid" people do not deserve to have to shell out money to protect their computers.

Or we could just say that if you're stupid enough to look up free porn from the internet in the first place, that you deserve your unsolicited attacks. It doesn't sound far off from the garbage you just preached with a stupidity tax.

While I actually agree with you, I have to mention that generally you have to pay to keep stuff safe- alarms, locks, tax for the army/police...

But the magic of the internet is that beyond the computer its self, there are no material costs, or, for the most part, upkeep costs. My software doesn't wearout over time. In the case of security software, there is constant need for updates, which understandable. But the lack of materials and the 0 cost in reproduction means that anyone can make something, and give it to everybody. Security software is just the same. Look at SpyBot, they don't have a paid version, and they never will, according to official statements. How can they afford this? The same way BYOND was, out of love for other human beings. Out of seeing the joy of helping the world. Unfortunatly companys like Microsoft don't understand things like humanity.

If Windows is really bothering you that much backup your files and Install Linux, preferably RedHat or SUSE (These will both run most Windows files and Applications)

I would (and have) but BYOND is still Windows-friendly only.

um... running windows programs and accessing files is not the domain of RedHat, SUSE, or Linux for that matter.

programs like OpenOffice2 read/write Microsoft files very nicely, and Wine/CrossOver Office/Cedega are there to run your Windows programs near-natively.

speaking of the later, i'm still working with the CrossOver Office team on getting BYOND working under Wine - they've given me access to the developer nightly builds. we've made some progress, but still have several major kinks in DS to get through. the guy in CO that i communicate with thinks most of the big issues are resolvable in the near future.

The more viruses you download/manually erase, the more exp points towards leveling up your anti-virus skillz! I just use regedit and the delete button to get rid of mine. Safe-mode occasionally.

Uh BYOND HAS a Linux version check the downloads section. I also agree that the consumer should not have to pay microsoft to fix problems they created Almost all Microsoft Software comes full of bugs so you'll have to buy the upgrade. Microsoft should release that while it may be a PC Giant other companies are catching-up and outperforming them
