I just want to get Tom's premission first. [link] *ahem* (third posting of it by-the-way) :p as long as you do not charge money for the fan-game, offering BYOND-Member-only content is your choice. |

Sorry Digital Mouse. Sometimes I don't open my eyes.
I've decided to let BYOND Members have a few extra features listed above. Staff can lock this if they want. |

mob That's granted it's not being done already. Not straying from the two games I inhabit. I wouldn't know. Hahaha. If I were making a game, I would tinker with this snippet a bit just for fun. :D |

giving the players in-game benefits is ok. charging money for playing the game is not. I'm really not so sure about that. The original post had a valid concern: giving benefits to BYOND Members may be seen as the equivalent of BYOND profiting from a fan game. If that game ever became large enough to attract the notice of the copyright holders, they could go after BYOND itself, right or wrong. With our current community size, I think the chances of that are slim to none, but we would like to grow at some point. Some content creators embrace their fan creations, while others are very draconian and try to stomp out any creative works based on their originals. We'd really rather not attract negative attention from the latter type. BYOND Staff have not discussed this, so don't take this as official word just yet. It's simply my opinion. I would personally shy away from doing anything of the sort in a fan game. Quite frankly, I would go one step further and make a game based on ideas like the original, but with all specific names, storylines, artwork, etc changed. Then you should be in the clear, regardless of what you do for Members. |

Sure, don't reward the people that spent their hard-earned money on a membership this is not a question of whether or not its good to support BYOND. fan games aren't supposed to reward people that spend their hard-earned money on BYONDimes. the question is: should membership fees be treated the same way? |
Because it's a fan game. Fan games aren't allowed to take money.
