Ok, my sisters PC when it boots up it loads her wallpaper and things and explorer opens then closes. I try to got to the task manager via ALT CTRL DEL and NEW TASK and try and run explorer but it does the same thing of starting and ending itself.

This is a very big problem! Please help.
She is running Windows XP Home.
I'd say try and restore windows. Hope you can find the CD's...

PS; Tell her to stop using MSN, for it is the devil.

I had the SAME problem. Here's what happened. I had winantispyware crap on my computer. I used spycatcher to remove it. It said that there was some stuff in windows explorer that needed to be removed when I restarted. I did, and explorer wouldn't open. I had the same problems. Since I didn't want to restore(the virus), I restarted the computer like 5 times and it worked

Try getting FireFox, or updating to IE7 (ungh)

He said Explorer, not Internet Explorer. FireFox is not a file browser.

Well, actually, if you go to the URL file:///c:/ in Firefox then you'll see something interesting... =)

But yeah, Sniper was referring to explorer.exe - which by the way is not just a file browser, it's actually the entire operating system shell. The desktop, Start menu, taskbar, etc. - all of these things are handled by explorer.exe.

As to the problem, I dunno, that's really weird. Sounds like explorer.exe keeps silently crashing or something. Have you tried starting up in safe mode?

The Event Viewer might have some useful error messages or something - try bringing up the task manager and starting the task Eventvwr.msc to have a look at it.

Yes tried to boot up in safe mode, then tried to re-install windows but it freezes. So what I did for my sister was download her a new shell!

Tada, it looks almost exactly like explorer, everybody wins.

You can view files, but that doesn't make it a file browser. There is no way that you could do all that you need to in normal file browsing in FireFox. I have been wanting that feature for a long time though.

Sure it's a file browser... just not a very useful one. You can browse as much as you like, as long as you don't want to do anything else. ;-P

But now we're just splitting hairs...

What do you mean "exactly?"
Is there like skinable shells?
