DM seems limited in making larger than 32x32 icons... was wondering if anyone has free programs they use?

MSPaint is exceedingly fit for pixel art. GIMP is good too, but some people have trouble getting use to it.

I really like Graphics Gale, especially for doing simple animations. The onion-skin feature is quite nice. The only limitation on the free version is that you cant save as .gif, .ico, .cur, or .ani. You can save as .png or .bmp though, then import that to DM.
