Anyone recommend any good Bass Guitar Tutorials online? I just got one for my birthday, and I need to learn to play it. It's 4 strings, bass electric guitar. And I have been wanting to know for a long time, and my time has finally come!
try the tabulature site olga.net - i think i recall links to tutorials mixed in with the lyric links.

Gah tutorials! I play the bass guitar and I've never read a tutorial in my life. I think the best way is to learn on your own, so you can get your own feel of it and not someone elses. All I do is get tabs, and learn from them. I don't see a point in learning notes unless your going to be part of a school band or symphony. Of course you don't have to do it my way either, but it worked well for me.

I'll admit that I, too, was a little taken offguard when asked for a "tutorial" for playing a musical instrument.

I would say that undoubtedly the best way to learn to play bass is to play along with a skilled drummer. Or, even better yet, an unskilled drummer that you can grow with. Then, you'll have such a deep musical connection with him, you won't even have to think about staying in the pocket.

If you want to learn to be a good bass player, you will never underestimate the value of practicing to metronomes or drums, be they live or machines.

I half-agree and half-disagree. Many people do a lot better when they know the notes that they're playing by name or relation to other notes by rules. Definitely don't rule out learning notes, because it will never hurt.

To tell someone not to learn notes when playing guitar is like telling someone not to learn grammar when speaking English. Sure, you can do it, but you're going to pick up an understanding of it regardless of if you're aware of it or not. I don't know the names of the notes I'm playing the very second I'm playing them (depending on where I am on the neck, that is) but I definitely know what notes will sound good in relation to the one I'm currently on.

Sometimes. >_> heh

Oh, jeez. I wrote the entire post about doing it your own way and then just scrolled down to see this part.

Crap.

Oh well! :)

ps: Cara, how are you doing! :)

Tutorials hmm check your local liberary out sicnce thats how my dad learned to play a normal guitar and he got good really fast i mean he started playing bass too just 5 months after
I have been playing the Bass Guitar for practically all of my life and I have not read one tutorial. You do not need too. There is no use for them, sure, maybe for learning the notes etc., etc., but that is about it. Goto this website for music tabs: http://www.mxtabs.net. They are an amazing website with practically every single song ever written on it. I learn to play full songs within five minutes with this website, I love it. Enjoy, and good luck!
