Anybody esle has played this before? I got this years ago in a 5 games for $5 pack and its been one of my favorites ever since. Even though the graphics aren't the best, it has kept me entertaiend for a long time during the period I was playing it. This has got to be one of the best TBS games I have ever played.

Hmm..I haven't played that one or any of his "newer" games..But I found this at a local store; Big Lots.

Several other BYONDers have SMAC. We played once, I think it was me, Theodis, Jon88, Mertek and Thorg (I think!).
The multiplayer online games take a LONG time to finish. Also, I suck at the game. I agree though, it's fun. A nice mix of styles since every technology is also a snippet of futuristic philosophy! |

Tell me the next time you guys plan to play it online. The last time I tried, no one was available to play against(It IS kinda old..). But single player is good enough to keep you occupied for a while though. I still don't qutie fully understand the satellite things that you can supposedly use to attack your opponents.

Hmm...
Ok, I'll look. Sounds fun. Historically, Sid Meier games (with the exception of the more recent Civilization III) are great. I'll see how I can get my hands on that one. --Vito |

Yar, I never got advanced enough to launch any.
We played a few matches, and usually it culminated in a battle between Jon88 and Theodis (Lal versus Zarkharov). I would just sell my alligence to anyone who would have me. :/ |

I don't think aside from being in the title of the game Sid Meier didn't have much to do with Civilization 3. Though I think the success of most of his stratagy games was due to the fact that they were designed by Brian Reynolds who has somewhat recently started the company Big Huge Games so he isn't working with Firaxis anymore. |

This has got to be one of the best RTS games I have ever played. That's really irking me, it's not a Real Time Strategy game, it's a turn-based strategy game. Real time strategy has no turn concept, and they tend to be much shorter than turn-based games because they are based more on military tactics than moving individual units. The reason it has 'real time' in it is because everyone is continiously playing. Civilization II is older than Alpha Centauri, and the two are different. Alpha Centauri allows you to "create" your own units through different researched armors, upgrades, weapons, and unit types. Civilization III has been out for quite some time, and is a mix of the concepts from Alpha Centauri and Civ II. Civilization IV is coming out in November, I believe. Anyone have an idea why these older game topics have been coming up? EDIT: Why do people say Civ III is bad? It's not much different from Civ II, it's literally a "new and improved" version of the game. |

EDIT: Why do people say Civ III is bad? Because Alpha Centauri is older and is better. While it may be better than Civ 2 feature wise it was a drop from Alpha Centauri which seems kinda odd given it was the same company developing it. |
Ohh, awesome game. I tried to convince my friend to play it but he got bored of it too fast while playing. You could play a single player match for a week. Pure awesomeness =)
Now you are making me want to find my CD case and install it >=\ Another strategy game I love is called "Fragile Allegiance". It's not turn based, but it's still awesome. |

Woah, suddenly makes sense...no wonder Rise of Nations (by Big Huge Games) was so awesome!

I still don't get it. Other than the "slapping together your own units" thing, it's mostly the same, just based in the future. Of course you can make cities in the oceans, but that's not realistic. The piece-together-your-own-government thing would always leave you with some detrimental area. I stll don't see how you can compare the two games. That is like comparing Total Annihilation to Age of Empires II. The two are both RTS, but they are based on different concepts that bring them apart in ways. |
