Thats nice to know, I've never called an American a yank, even though my Father does it every time.

English is largely based off a Germanic root language that was modified post Roman invasion. But even that neglects the tremendous French influences post Norman invasion. There's a pretty good summary at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_language .

As to "correct", languages evolve. American English is no more nor less correct then British English. Remember that while British English may be the "original" (not entirely, since it is not stagnant and has also evolved, but at least it seems to have varied less), American English is spoken by roughly 4 times as many people.

Getting back to the original topic, I can't imagine why anyone would harass you simply for your national origin. Well, unless you are prone to bouts of obnoxious militant nationalism, like many Americans seem to be. But barring that, perhaps you just run in circles populated by a disproportionate amount of rude, intolerant, or ignorant people? Many online communities seem to display this, unfortunately....

Although the USA has a very strong armed forces, doesn't mean that they are that powerful. The USA could be overturned rather easy economicly causing a collapse of government. The WTC attacks where attempting that, and where close to it. That is why they where the target. They could have killed a lot more by bombing a sporting event.
It's not prejudice against Brits exactly; more prejudice against Brits that aren't Thorg.

We could have won that one, but we pulled back because of loss of life. Poeple complained that we had no good reason to be there, and that people where dying pointlesly. I know little about the war though, and losing is losing.
In response to Scoobert
We didn't have a right to be there. It wasn't a war really. The president then (I forget his name)sent them over without Congresses approval for a war.

Sounds like Iraq.

Well, for the first 60(I think that is right) days of war, congress doesn't need to approve, after that, they have to or the troops will be withdrawn, but the problem with that system is that the other country sees it as an attack, reguardles of the laws in our country. Like I said though, I know little about said war.
In response to Scoobert
Actually, that law came about because of the Vietnam 'War'. That was never in place until those troops were sent over.

I'm glad to see that you appreciate your allies' efforts in combating the Nazis. It brings a warm feeling to my heart, it really does.

I'm sure Britain's assistance with your current conflict will continue to improve your admiration of the country and its people.

Thats what Im takling about Artekia. Too many people run off and cry from such simple things and try to blow it out of proportion.

Worlds too soft.

Heh, well, you see not al Americans are like that, but people who are like that seem to be mostly Americans. As an American, I find it terribly embarassing. Such as my last trip to Europe. I was having a great time, all the people I met were very nice. Then in Trier (which was bustling with weekend shoppers), we were eating at Mc Donald's and these guys are making a scene outside, yelling at people and causing a ruckus. When one guy started to holler "USA! USA!" I wanted to punch him. (What a scene THAT would have been- a bunch of brawling Americans :-)) But the people handled it well, ignoring them until they wandered off (I have no doubt arrest would have made them even more belligerent as they were probably drunk) and normality resumed.

What bothers me is that is far from the only time I have seen such behavior by unruly Americans. Not that we behave any better at home, mind you, but I would think as guests in a country at least a modicum of civility is in order. And it probably wouldn't bother me but I love this nation and absolutely despise the reputation these people create.

You see it alot on the internet, too. American decrying any perceived slight while advocating ridiculous positions such as invasion of our allies or widescale bombing/massacre of civillian populations (nuke the Middle East). Again, not all Americans are like this. Indeed, I like to think most are decent, rational folk just trying to make a living. But the vocal one sure can get nasty. Which earns all of us Americans a less than stellar reputation because often we don't stand up to these proverbial bullies and let them know that we don't support such views (even if we do tolerate them).

Yep. Yes it does.
