How did this whole thing start where people used numbers as letters. Example H3ll0. 1337.

This is just a question I have thought about for a while.

My guess is it started when sucky FPS gamers needed a way to confuse their opponents in multiplayer games. Sort of like a very simple layer of encryption, like pig Latin (but not as complex). Of course once it caught on it would have completely lost any sort of edge.

Hackers used it in counter-strike.
Beck in the day when the internet was mostly just builitin boards like this forum, hackers and pirates and such would use "l33t" speak to avoid certain searches done by officials to find culprits. Now only little whiney 12 year olds use it.

Then again, they aren't really "hackers"(which is the wrong term anyhow) -- they just download programs and hope it doesn't have a trojan.
