from what I understand the book is set in the past (not the present like the movie) almost 100 years ago or more?

I will have to read both those books because the movie interested me in concept and idea but I thought was poorly executed... like a lot of parts seemed rush and just not well done (the graphics were amazing). Perhaps it was just the acting/actors that were bothering me... I might go see it again just to get another look.

It was wrote in 1898. Its based in London, and Written by H.G Wells. The guy was socialist too... anyway.

I have to ask, is there anywhere in the film where an american flag appears ? I have a thing against americanisation of British stuff, especialy when they flag around the stars and stripes, and I'll be totaly put off if they do.

I heard something in a review about a tripod popping up in New York, so I'm assuming that it's based in America.
Considering that pretty much every non-American on the planet loaths the 'saving the day with America power' scenario it's pretty safe to assume that any bad review would bring it up. I haven't encountered any complaints about it yet, so here's hoping.
[spoiler alert]

I didn't like it either. My main problem was that is was more about Tom Cruse and less about the war or the worlds. All it is is one big movie about Tom Cruse running from aliens. The biggest action part was when he took the ax to one of the tripod's tenticals.
I have no idea what I would do, but knowing me, I would have been killed with the first few, mostly bad luck. The only reason Tom survived is a lot of luck.
I just didn't find it very entertaining, which is far more important than any thing factual. I was bored the entire time. I am not one to be entertained by cheesy movies like "Alien vs Predictor" or "Jason XXXXXXVII"(or whatever they are up to).
Not to say this movie was cheesy, but they did miss some important flaws. In the beginning of the movie, when you see the first tripod raise from the ground, there is a man with a working camera. Now even Tom's watch was stopped by the alien emps, but a digital camcorder wasn't?
When he blew up the tripod, there was another one right beside him, would that one not just zap all the people getting free?

you forgot several other electronic devices that worked like the reporter's van and tv...

Yes I completely agree, the movie was just about tom... and a little bit about his family. I hated the scene's where tom, the kid and the other dude were hiding from the aliens... they were really long parts of the movie and they were rediculous.

Actually, the tv van would work. It was not in the middle of it. Just like everything in the house worked. It was not close to an emp, so nothing was ruined. But getting a signal from other places is weird, considering the emps. Also, when they show him the video of the lightning, I don't think a camera would be able to see very much, lightning is very bright, and it would have just been a blur.

A movie on this scale should be checked for such big flaws.
Great movie, just needed more information. I saw it with my uncle who knew about it but if he didn't give me some info I would have left the movie theater confused.

The reasons the sheilds went down was because when the aliens were sucking up all the human blood and just the fact that they were on the planet, they were exposed to bacteria and all kinds of disease. That's why that alien fell out of the tripod dead, at the end when they attacked to tripods.

I think that the son should have died. I don't see any way possible that he could have lived. He ran up the hill and when the Tom Cruise was running down the hill to get Dakota Fanning, the aliens attacked all the tanks and the hill practically blew up and was on fire.

The ending sucked. How come the aliens attacked the whole entire planet, yet Boston is left there unharmed? I think the acting of the 17 year old kid was very good (the actual guy was 22) and Dakota did well in her second alien movie with Steven (Taken on Sci-Fi and now this one). Tom and the Crazy guy were good too. I think this film was very good.
