I have crappy dial-up, and when I download music sometimes it will go at 8KB /sec. Other times 5KB /sec, but right now it's going at about .47KB /sec to 1.07KB /sec. Is there some sort of secret to make dial-up faster?
Speeds go faster on Linux, I believe. Correct me if I'm incorrect. :p

You mostlikely are. The best thing I can tell you is to upgrade to dsl or cable, I recommend cable, but isn't always possible.

I agree - There's no secret to making your dial-up faster. The only way to get faster internet is by upgrading to broadband. I suggest DSL. Here's my DSL provider:

Clicking that link will lead you to a promotional offer being held that will sell you 12 months of quality DSL for approximately $15.00/month.

You can sometimes eke out a -little- bit more speed by eliminating sources of line noise. The noisier the line, the slower your connection will be. There's not much you can do about the copper between you and the ol' home office... but everything inside the house is at least partly under your control. Make sure you use a new phone cord to connect to your modem. Make sure it's not any longer than it needs to be, with coils draping everywhere (electromagnetic induction, anybody?) and if it's plugged into a splitter or goes through a fax machine or phone before it hits the wall, that can be a bad thing. Basically, the less stuff there is between your modem and the wall, the better.

If you do upgrade to DSL, all of the above still applies times 10... normal phone calls (including modem calls) use the innermost reaches of the phone cord, which is harder for interference to reach... so a lot of the normal background electromagnetic junk doesn't affect your dial up... but if you get DSL, the signal is carried on that "wasted" section of the pipe... so where you hear a little crackle, the DSL transceiver has a whole bowl of Rice Krispies.

If you can get cable, get cable. Your internet connection will only go down as often as your cable does.
