I hear that in 4.0 or even beyond there will be the ability to make 3D games.

At first I thought, Wow that would be awsome, but then after a while. I came to the assumption that if BYOND does go down this road (with DirectX, I believe) that the games will start to be all about grahpics, and BYOND will punge back into the dark ages!!!

Besides, that will put a LOT of icon makers out of work that don't know how to draw 3D
Even if BYOND was going 3d, which I don't believe it is, what would stop game designers from making 2d games? Plus even if it went to an engine more stable at handling 3d, which it probably wont, why would it matter if "icon makers" went out, if they wanted to they would adjust to modeling graphics instead of sticking to one side of the table.
BYOND going 3D..I doubt that would happen..

Yes, but I believe more people would want to play a "COOL LOOKING" 3D game rather than some "MYSTIC JOURNAY".
(Ungh! It has CRAPPY grahpics compared to my 1337 3D GRAHPICAL ADVENTURE GAME!)

Well I heard from sonewhere that if / when we get DirectX or something like that, BYOND *could* suport 3D (yet also linux and mac could actually start to get grahpics)
BYOND will not have DirectX support, because that will cut out a great part of the audience (Unix, Linux, Mac) - if anything, it will recieve OpenGL support, so that the other formats can play games with graphics. And with the current server-only format of procs and variables (compared to a true server-client split of procs and vars), it would't be able to do most 3d games with any good speed.

However - there are 3d games available now already for BYOND, and it isn't harming anybody either.

What you are thinking of is OpenGL, not DirectX.

Yeah yeah OpenGL........
But I heard they are not TRULY 3D only mere illusions *ooO*

Nothing Wrong with 3-D games, and I would fully welcome them.

Wasnt it a few years back some guy made software that ran in conjunction with Byond to have a fully 3-D world, with texturing and everything? He even had a demo out.

There will always be a love for the simple 2-D sprite work that has been part of Byond, and these games wuoldnt die out. But it would be nice to see some hardcore, well done, 3-D-esc Byond games.

There's been no discussion of supporting 3D games explicitly, outside of the clever solutions that people have already come up with.

That doesn't mean that some kind of 3D game might become more practical in the future, but it hasn't been the focus of any discussion.
3D isn't even remotely on the table. However, I'd be quite amenable at some point to adding an isometric system. In theory that wouldn't be all that hard to do once a more versatile icon format is in place.
