Here is a basic answer to your questions:
because monopolization(sp?) is illegal, and having 1 system that plays everything is just that, a monopolization(sp?) of the gaming industry, which would mean the company that holds the rights to the said system could charge what ever they wanted, because your only choice is them or nothing. imagine paying thousands of dollars just for one game. then youd be wishing for multiple systems.

Which is why there's competition. =P

Monopolies are illegal in the US :P. I'm not sure about Japan but I know there are companies like De Beers which hold a monopoly and continue to do so without intervention.

That was true, a year and a half ago, while there were no new game engines, and everybody was making one. Now that theres are, upgrade, nad you might be good for another two years or so.

Its not illegal. The goverment just discourages it.

Besides that, there really aren't that many new system producers, just new systems. Nintendo has more systems than anyone else that I know of, and I like most of their systems, except DS, maybe when they get better games for it I'll buy it. Sony is trying to compete, but I'm fine with just sticking with the PS2, most of my friends who got PSP don't like it. Sega had to drop out of the race a year or so ago, and MAcintosh isn't really in it (even though there XBOX is cool, Nintendo still mainly controls games). So probably in a few years Nintendo will have a monopoly (except computers)

And, even if computers were the only source of games, there are still multiple makers of both PCs (Windows, Apple, etc) and video games (Square Enix, EA Games, etc) that there still wouldn't be a monopoly.)

So, as illustrated, monopoly has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

Right, but there is no reason why each producer ahs to be produce so many systems in just a few years.

Right. Super Nintendo still ahs cool agmes on it (except for the fact its graphics aren't that great), and even though it was before my time, I've also played Atari, which was ok. The original Nintendo does have a few good games on it. Every once in a while I will take my old one out, dust it off, and begin playing. Of course, they only work if you take *REAL* good care fo it.

o.o
How old are you, James?
In response to OneFishDown
Yes. But once a company comes out with a new console, they stop producing new games for the older console. On a PC, as long as you upgrade it frequently, you should be able to play any games on it. Both old and new, without spending as much money on say a Game Boy Color just so you can spend a greater amount on a Game Boy Advance a little while later. Also, why buy a Super Nintendo when a few eyars later they'll stop making them and move to N64 and then to Nintendo DS? Or a PS1 just to buy a PS2?

It is definately cheaper to use a comp than replace gaming consoles every few years.

14. I'm pretty sure Atari had stopped being made before I was born or at least before I was old enough to play it. But I remember my mom saying she played it when she was a kid.
Oh, I was talking about Atari being before my time, not Super Nintendo. I'm pretty sure that was new around the time I was 3/4/5 sometime around there.

I'll always support Nintendo because I was raised with it and Zelda. But I still think they'd do better if they started making games for computer so people didn't always have to purchase new systems.
In response to Theodis
True. Once they start doing updates for Nintendo, I'll probably leave comps and go back to them. Currently I just have to deal with emulations because my mom always says she can't afford a new console......

No it is illegal which is why Microsoft faced several lawsuits and almost got divided into two companies. Though there are some government regulated monopolies from businesses that naturally form them(ie anything with a very high cost to get infrastructure set up for them like utilities).

And when did this happen? A company cannot get in trouble b/c people prefer it or people don't want to compete with them.
How can the company get in trouble for something it has no control over? If you can prove this is illegal, fine. In fact, right now I'm going to look for proof its not illegal besides common sense.
And the fact that it was irrevalant to the thread still is true.

A little while back. http://news.com.com/2100-1040-840478.html

Right now, I would agree with you. I'm unsure though, because PC games seem to be developing very quickly. You have games requiring extremely high-priced PCs no matter how you look at it(Doom 3, EQ2, FarCry(not as much, but still)). All they are going to do is get more complex, and as it seems now even faster than the console ones. My guess is, though, when the next generation consoles come out the console games will develop quickly again.
In response to Razor52
I had my XBox moded to play all games PS2, Gamecube, PC(ect) plus alot of memory so I can put games on it not to mention it has all the old games from Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, and all the gameboy games and I can put DVD's on it. ^.^

I think it would be a good idea if someone invented a 'standard' for PCs, and a simply app the checks to see what standard your PC is at.
DirectX is a bit of a graphics standard, i.e. only graphics cards that support all DX functions are fully compliant.

That would be pointless. Microsoft would just ignore them, just like they have with the Web Standards

Gamecube would be a lot better if people made games for it. I see games like Battlefront, the commercial showing 3 boxes so I'm like "I am going to buy it for Gamecube!". Turns out it was for PC, Xbox, and PS2. Its either the Nintendo people who are not accepting the games or the developers shying away from Nintendo. If it is the Nintendo people, they are turning down stuff for 'Billy Hatcher' and other junk like that. Not even Katamari Damacy came out for GCN when they both were from Japan. Resident Evil 4 proved that the Gamecube can support some great games but no one has really utilized it. No online games is system suicide. I got the broadband and telephone adapters for the Cube but all that is out is Phantasy Star Online, which was good for a while online but $5 a month is too steep. Call of Duty came out for the Gamecube but wasn't online like for Xbox and PS2. I've heard that Nintendo is going to try and be the first to put out a new system this cycle to make up for when it came out last. If they come out with the new system before I get one good online game, I'll jump them. I hear a lot from Techtv (denounce the G4, people) that they complain about an Xbox game with no online play. They're being ungrateful that Xbox even has online games. I guess Gamecube people have gotten used to it now. Gamecube could even have a microphone for online using the one from Mario Pary 6. Game developers just aren't willing to take a chance with the GCN and make something new. And to solve the internal hard drive issue, someone could develop a larger memory card that looks like the Wave Bird controller piece that plugs into the machine except for the memory card slot. It would be like 10 memory cards put together. The black GCN memory cards with the extended memory can hold more stuff that the normal (not sure if there are any special ones out yet) PS2 cards can.

EDIT/PS: I've read some posts and is the next Gamecube (Nintendo Revolution, I've heard) going to have those customized controllers that work like touch screens?
